Socket Support for Intel i7
Hello Heaveners, I searched and didn't come up with any useful posts so I'll ask here. I wish to build my own computer in the coming year and I am wondering what Intel motherboard sockets support the i7. I am not worried about i5 or anything lower just strickly i7. Also, I am thinking with going with a Sapphire motherboard, any comments?

Re: Socket Support for Intel i7
There are three types of i7...
One that uses socket 1155 One that uses socket 1156 One that uses socket 1366 |

What does this do?

Re: Socket Support for Intel i7
Also, in case it's not clear from V3's post, there are no i7s capable of working in more than one socket. You can't change motherboard socket and keep the same CPU, and you can't change CPU socket and keep the same motherboard.

Re: Socket Support for Intel i7
As Veridian said it depends on the socket that you're planning to use...
Sapphire's socket 1366 (X58 chip) motherboard is: http://www.sapphiretech.com/presenta...1039&sgid=1051 and Sapphire's socket 1155 (P67 chip) motherboard is: http://www.sapphiretech.com/presenta...1040&sgid=1052 HH did a great review on the X58 model, http://www.hardwareheaven.com/review...ure-black.html Not much choice really if you're going to stick with Sapphire.

Re: Socket Support for Intel i7
Considering the fact that it was mentioned that "in the coming year"...
and as far as we know... Intel is set to introduce a new socket that likely will include the i7 in the list.. the Socket R ~> LGA2011 with sandybridge rev2 for the highend solutions.. the 1156/1155 sockets are dual channel DDR3 and such.. where as the 1366 and 2011 are Triple channel.... 1366 will go the way that the 1156 socket went..... discontinued and obsolete.. So it's up to you to decided to stick with the 1366 which will oventually go bye bye... or jump onboard the 2011 which is expected to make an appearance later this year... and will hopefully last a good 2-5 years before it's thrown away.
