Storage device Suggestions ?
Since i am sorta behind the times can someone suggest an external storage device for my collection of processed DSLR jpegs & Music files.
I am looking for a device that possibly comes with its own software to be installed on windows xp thru windows 7 that wont just start downloading everything at once from my pc when you first connect it to one of the PC USB ports. I want to control what will be externally stored by my selection and afterwards unplug the external storage media device and then delete the files from my PC to increase my storage capacity. Then simply re-connect the device to either view the downloaded stored files or add newly processed jpegs or new music files at my leisure. So what can any of you folks suggest i consider that will give me this capability? I have seen the below but dont really need this type for external viewing: Digital Foci Picture Porter 35 250GB Internal Hard P23-250 B&H But i dont want a portable external HD that copys ALL the PC files when you 1st hook-it up to the PC either. Regards

Re: Storage device Suggestions ?
most hard drives will try to backup everything on your computer but you can stop it and remove that software so you have all the space of the drive and I would expect you would be better off to get at least a 1TB external as they shouldn't be that pricey as long as you are ok with needing a wall outlet to power the drive.
Newegg.com - iomega Select 1TB USB 2.0 Black Portable Hard Drive 34827 here is a 1TB without a need for a power supply |

Re: Storage device Suggestions ?
I'm a big fan of NAS storage boxes such as the D-Link DNS-323. You just buy the box, and whatever hard drive/s you want (up to 2 @ 2TB each), and plug it into your home network. You access the GUI via your web browser, and setup anything you want on it. After that you just run the Easy Access tool on your PC, and you can mount the drives as virtual drives on your PC. Then it's just a matter of copy/pasting/moving data to it as if it were local.
Price wise you'd be looking at $150 just for the box, then picking whatever size hard drive you want. So for, say, $250, you could buy yourself the box and a 2TB hard drive, or the box and 2x1TB hard drives. 'Course, this isn't a portable solution. For that you'd want something like the WD My Passport, My Passport Essential, or My Passport Elite (the Elites come with docking stations for easy hookup while at home). However, while the D-Link DNS-323 isn't a portable solution it does have a built in FTP server. Set that up, and you access that from any PC, anywhere, via an FTP client (like FileZilla). |
