extremely slow speeds with Asus n16 wireless router

hey, guys, hoping someone might be able to help me out with this since Asus isn't able to. I've been calling forever and every time I call in I'm told that their systems are down and they'll call me back when they are up, but no one ever does.
Anyways, I have an Asus N16 router. Suppose to be kick ass for P2P and such, but I'm getting really REALLY slow transfer speeds between computers at home. I have my gaming rig wired directly, then I have my file server, and my girlfriend's laptop running wirelessly. When I try to watch a high def movie from my server to my gaming rig, or my girlfriend's laptop, it always pauses every so often. I run a check and they are saying they are connecting at 135-145Mb/s, but actual transfer rates are ~2MB/s (which is about 16Mb/s). Even if I'm holding the laptop inches away from the wireless router I am still getting these kind of rates.
btw, forgot to add, I've tried using a USB wireless N adapter as well as a wireless access bridge to plug into the computer. They all get the same speeds. Common denominator is the Asus router.
Any ideas how to get better speeds? Should I get a new WiFi router, and if so which one (leaning toward Trendnet if anyone has an opinion on it)? Would those power line networking things give me a better speed for my server at least?

Re: extremely slow speeds with Asus n16 wireless router

I have something similar with my Linksys E2000 - my PS3 has horrific download speeds if connected wirelessly but fine if wired. Similarly, transferring files over the network (which should be gigabit) from my PC to my laptop or vice-versa takes ages - longer than transferring via USB drive!

If anyone knows the answer to this problem, please do share. It makes no sense...
