XP 2700 or 2800?
Wondering if it is worth the additional $50 to buy an athlon xp 2800 instead of the 2700?
Also plan on buying 512 mb of pc 3200 GEIL RAM Asus a7n8x mobo (unsure if to get deluxe) |

Question?
Why not just get the Barton 2500+ and a decent heatsink/fan and OC that puppy to better than 2700 levels?

DW's right
I just upgraded my rig ( wife's outta town
) from an Asus a7n8x dx v1.4 XP 2600 to the Abit nf7-s with the 2500 Barton flashed it to the latest bios and presto it configured the 2500 as a Barton 3200@200X11 very fast cheap combo. I've seen the 2500's for around 90$ and the mobo for 120. The Abit board rocks unlocks all multi's + it's faster than the Asus .I dropped my fsb down to 166 and upped the multi to 13 cause I'm using 1g ddr 2700 though so I could run my mem sync'ed. Broke 16k in 3dmark 2001 and scored 276 in the new UT2K3 benchie without oc'ing the vid card. According to Sandra I'm performing very very close to an XP 2800. I'm also using the stock cooler and my temp's are lower than running at 200X11 40-42c idle 48-49c under load. You really can't beat the price performance of the Barton 2500 and the Abit NF7-S! I'm also using the pata sata adapter and scored 31678 in Sandra's hd bench ..and I forgot to defrag first lol. Also the Abit's SoundStorm is certified and sounds great plus you won't have to wait for Asus to modify the sound driver if Nvidia ever gets around to releasing a new Good driver package. Sorry for babbling but this updated system rocks.. Can't wait to upgrade my mem and get good cooling and see what this baby can really do

Once you deside on a motherboard I'd check their website and look for ram compatability issues before buying any ram ... ask here and perhaps Nforcershq and ask if anyone is having (or had) issues with what your going to buy.. you can save yourself alot of problems beforehand and needless rma's.
As for hs/fan combo's I'll bow to those with more experience to answer that.I'm still using the stock AMD one myself and will ask what one is best for me when I'm ready to buy one. I'd imagine it will depend on your cpu/motherboard combo. Certain heatsinks may not fit without seriously bending resistors<shudder> around the cpu socket or fail to fit altogether.
