Hello. I am interested in purchasing the Asus Maximus IV and have a quick question about it's memory compatibility. The supposed supported memory is as follows: 2200(O.C)/2133(O.C)/1866/1600/1333/1066/. My issue is that I do not see many RAM sets out there that support 2200/2133. The best deals I see are for 2000Mhz sets. Even though 2000Mhz is not listed in the specs is there still a way to install them on the motherboard and have them function properly? Thanks! Also if the motherboard happens to be a crap purchase let me know please lol. This is my first time building a PC.

Also a question to consider. Is it worth footing out the extra $$ to even get the faster 2000Mhz RAM? Or would it be better to spend about the same amount or less on higher capacity but slower 1600-1866Mhz?

Recommendations?

Re: Asus Maximus IV Memory

sorry just got to this... (out for lunch)

The rated memory options are mostly for "support" of those speeds and likely their voltages and such.

They really are no major concern.. specially like you said, those speeds aren't easily obtains because most memory isn't even past the 2000mhz mark.

As for purchasing the fast ram vs slightly slower higher density (larger capacity).... always go with the capacity.

If you were looking at 2000mhz 2x2gb Kit.... don't... go for the 1600mhz 2x4gb kit... it's a WAY better options.

Also i'm running 6x4gb 2000mhz Patriot memory (you can look at my specs)... and because it's a very fast ram.... running it at 1600mhz produces for me at least, the best performance due to having better tolerance.. (running the ram slower then what it's speced at usually allows for tighter timings and low latencies, so technically it's faster then if you were to buy 1600mhz ram, it's harder to get the same performance compared)

IF your looking for memory.... I would suggest the Patriot Viper II extreme memory i'm running as their dollar value is quite low and they come in 2 channel kits.

They make a cheaper 1600mhz version that is quite cheap as well.

Also keep in mind that many of the motherboards do not support faster than 1333mhz when running specific CPU's... example being an intel i3 2100/2120 or similar.

as for your motherboard choice.... Why did you choose it? Any reason in perticular?
(your motherboard choice here ~> ASUSTeK Computer Inc. - Motherboards- ASUS Maximus IV Extreme )

Would you like an alternative (that likely will be cheaper and just as friendly)

I've been building machines recently using the Asus P8H67-M Evo
Found here ~> ASUSTeK Computer Inc. - Motherboards- ASUS P8H67-M EVO

Now the major difference is that yours i full ATX form factor and the one i use is a mATX form factor and includes the ability to use the DP/DVI/HDMI/VGA ports via the i3/i5 iGPU.

Yours is more oriented towards enthusiasts wanting to overclock and such, and eliminates the iGPU option (which obviously if your using a video card is a better options for you to use the one you've picked)

Just throwing ideas out there ...

Thanks for the reply. The motherboard you suggested is great, but it does not support memory speeds greater than 1333Mhz.

I chose the ASUS motherboard because it supports the high memory speeds, which when I find a good deal I will make use of. It also supports CPU overclocking and I just in general want a good gaming motherboard. I plan on getting an ATI 6000 series card, eventually in Crossfire, so the GPU is not really an issue.

Re: Asus Maximus IV Memory

it's only advertised as 1333mhz tops.... but i'm positives that when i had a i7 2600 in it that i managed to clock the ram at 1600mhz.... (i may have to check back on that...)

Either way... if your indeed wanting to play with clocking... then indeed stick to your choice.... i was just curious and figured offering a cheaper alternative that provided some good starter options would be handy and i know the one i have been using is a solid board

Good luck.
