Drives showing as audio

I've had a rather strange surprise when I re-installed windows for the new X79 motherboard - both of my disc drives are showing in Windows as audio drives:

From the above screenshot, the D drive is actually empty and the E drive has a blank disc inserted. What's even more interesting is the "blank" disc. I opened up the drive with the blank disc in and Windows prompted me to choose the name & burning options as normal. I named it, chose closed disc and this is what I found when I opened it up:

Keep in mind that this is a new, freshly-formatted DVD.

I thought that it was the ports that I had plugged them into at first. Because the SATA-3 ports were closer I plugged both disc drives into the (Marvel) SATA-3 ports. After noticing that the disc drives were showing as audio CDs I changed one to the Marvel SATA-2 controller ports. It still showed as an audio CD.
My next step is to upgrade the BIOS. I'm running on F3 (I think, it's an old one anyway) and the latest is F7, which prevents the motherboard from blowing up.

Any other ideas?

Re: Drives showing as audio

I'm having the exact same problem. I have included the PC and Otical drive specs bellow taken - from from Piriform Speccy... Notice the contents of the drives are listed as Audio CDs. Well, one of the drives has a Blu Ray inserted and the other is empty.

I'm still getting this machine in order. I built it a couple of weeks ago.... This issue (and Christmas) has been taking up a wee bit too much of my time though. The drives still function. If I take discs in and out a couple of times their actual content gets recognized. I usually also have to close and reopen programs and that seems to help. I did manage to crash iTunes, trying to import the phantom audio.

All my programs see these divices with Audio CDs in them... even when they are empty. If I click open (like I want to view files in the drives) They show up just like the pictures you have included above - CDA tracks. Very strange. Also, notice the crazy old date of your "audio files"?? Mine say 12/31/1994 6:00pm. One difference is that I sometimes have more or less audio files listed in the contents of these phantom CDs.... Sometimes 16 tracks, sometimes 3, sometimes just 1.

Bug in BIOS? Since you two have the same issue and have mobo's based on X79 chipset...

Re: Drives showing as audio

It's not unlikely to be the BIOS. The more annoying issue that I'm having at the moment though is that I keep having to reset the BIOS if I leave my PC off for a few hours. That's only since upgrading to F7, however.
The drives are still showing as audio drives by the way.

Re: Drives showing as audio

i'm at a total loss as to why... I haven't had an issue myself with my new x79 board and such.

Not using the Intel C600 SATA controller?

I disable the SSD cache ports that asus slapped on mine, as well as the marvel... no need to so many damn SATA ports at the moment,

I've my SSD plugged into Port 0 and standard drive in port 1 which are SATA III

then i have my Asus Blu-Ray RW drive plugged into port 5 which is SATA II

The only thing i can think of as being potential cause would be using a SATA III cable on the drive... i haven't seen a single optical drive that runs in sata II or III mode... and using a SATA III cable may not be adviseable.

Re: Drives showing as audio

I'm having the same problem with my optical drive. I just made the pc yesterday with the rampage iv motherboard and i have the same problem, I tried switching optical drives as i thought it was the problem, but same thing. As per suggestion of the comment above i switched everything and the cable to sata II, but same thing. Currently updating the bios.

Update-

Just finished updating to the latest bios, and still nothing

Re: Drives showing as audio

I no longer have the issue. I went to the ASUS website and downloaded and installed ALL the current driver updates etc. for all the assorted goodies on the board.... I installed all the nifty programs as well. Somewhere in that circus the issue corrected itself. I have since updated the bios but that was not necessary for fixing this problem. I wish I knew which update did the trick but I am at a loss. Good luck.

Worth a shot I guess. I'll try later this evening.
Thanks for sharing, RIK.

Re: Drives showing as audio

Hi, sorry to resurrect an old thread but I have just done a fresh install of Windows 7 64bit as I have upgraded my computer with a Asus Sabertooth X790 mb, SSD drives, etc.

I too have encountered exactly the same issue as the OP and wondering if a solution has been found for this issue?

I have tried everything that has been suggested from upgrading to latest BIOS, re-installing Win7, swopping cables/ports around, installing all the latest drivers and utilities from Asus website and still the issue persists....

If anyone has any further insight I would very much appreciate your help.

Re: Drives showing as audio

I'm not actually 100%sure what the solution was, I'm afraid. I just don't have the issue any more. I believe it was because I didn't have the official drivers for the SATA controller installed - I was running the drivers from Win7 initially.
Either that or it was a Windows Update... or it was because I moved the disc drives to SATA-2.

Re: Drives showing as audio

Thanks for the response Takaharu, I have actually just found the solution on the Asus forums in a very old post. Why I didn't look there first I don't know

"remove your current installation of IRSTe, and replace it with the latest V3.0.0.2003 from the Asus download page to fix this problem"

This has sorted the problem out.

Thanks
