Definately a P4 with HT !

HT = Hyper Threading. Basically :

Quote:
Hyper-Threading Technology provides thread-level-parallelism (TLP) on each processor resulting in increased utilization of processor execution resources. As a result, resource utilization yields higher processing throughput. Hyper-Threading Technology is a form of simultaneous multi-threading technology (SMT) where multiple threads of software applications can be run simultaneously on one processor. This is achieved by duplicating the architectural state on each processor, while sharing one set of processor execution resources. Hyper-Threading Technology also delivers faster response times for multi-tasking workload environments. By allowing the processor to use on-die resources that would otherwise have been idle, Hyper-Threading Technology provides a performance boost on multi-threading and multi-tasking operations for the Intel NetBurst® microarchitecture.

Make sure its a 2.6C all C procs have HT, but thats not why they are good. They are good because they have a 200MHz FSB and they overclock to no end; many people get over 1GHz overclocks with them.

Wrong mobo.

OH, WAIT! You do know that a P4C will be incompatable with your current mobo, right? You will need to get a new mobo to use it.

Now that I realised that I would reccomend a 2500+ and a NF7-S rev 2.

i have the p2.4ht 800mhz fsb everything seems to zip through compaired to my previous p2.5 400mhz fsb without ht.

so yep the p2.4.

it will show when installed in the system properties show 2 drivers instead of 1 driver.

just a small quote i think the first p4 were 1.4ghz. p3 only went as high as 1.3ghz i think. that would be the transfer of cpu's.

Thats just marketing. They say that the r9700pro has 680MHz ram too, they want to make the numbers as large as possible so it looks better.

it is not just marketing. the bus speed is 4x 200. that, or are you saying every bench mark & cpuid/sys info utility out there is wrong?
while i (at this point) do not see as large as benefit as the numbers suggest, there is a definite speed improvement. this is part of the reason p4c's are the fastest cpu out there. not counting amd high end 64 chip. that p4c 2600 will be faster than that 2500+ & clock considerably higher. very easily too i might add!

Bit late

A little late on this post, but ABIT IC7-G or the ASUS P4800, with the 2.4C chip. Both are excellent mobo's, the ASUS has a gain with an "Improved~After market HT BIOS", on the other hand ABIT is quick to update their BIOS, but not for the extended HT BIOS. You can't go wrong on either board though.

The 2.4C is the chip of choice for OC'ing & along with that ~Bang for buck -A no lose deal!

Enjoy the best...
{Edit} The best buy & refunds {If it won't work} are found @ Newegg.com

I would have gone for another AMD, but a $1,000 for a mobo & CPU is out_ragous!

Cheers

No one pointed this out but I'd thought I'd mention the fact that only Windows Xp Pro and Home uses HT. I'd assume 2003 does too but it doesn't list it. You can see if your OS is supported here .

Actually you are right, nobody pointed that out. But both mobo's are excellent without HT enabled, though the ABIT is the stronger mobo - Newegg sold out their refurbs at almost half the price within two days.

I forgot to go back to the beginning of the thread {So I don't remember if I mentioned}, but this rig has an Albatron with a 2.66g @ 4.13g Twinmos PC3700 (Volt was at 6, burned in and dropped it to 5.575), coupled with SDSL, it burns rubber! Downsides- I can't run a burner, can't figure out why; CDR no problem. Win2k Pro. Neither the Yamaha F1 nor the the old original Memorex 2 speed, both of which work fine on the AMD rig. The onboard NIC does not work, no matter, I like to use 3COM XP ~Processor onboard NIC's anyway.

Buy another Albatron, probably not. The 'Owner' was a Gig employee who broke off & I thought it was a cool idea to see how he did.

the canterwood chips are pretty good, althought the boards are a little expensive

if u wan't a cheaper solution i'd go a xp2500 barton and nf7-s rev 2.0, which can be got for abot £140 or so and for the price is great plus u could o/c it to 3200+ speeds

Actually

P4P800 {865}

chris285 Is correct about the Canterwood (875 chipset), but the Spingdale (865 Chipset ) can match the Canterwood with a tweak or two and save a fist full of $$$$$$. Both will run the 'C' {HT} CPU.

It's pretty slow on the mobo front right now, for new items and the price seems to be going up, not down.

I usually tend to the second generation mobo's anway (In this case the 865), because the weakest link is BIOS and it takes @ least one revision before they get it right! I don't have time to tweak a BIOS right now or I would also recomend the 875 chipset based mobo.

BTW, I didn't mention the Albatron I'm running is 845 ~So, again save a few bucks.
I did prefer AMD for price & bang 4 buck, but those days are gone.

Hey! I own a 1.4GHz PIII! It was one of their server end chips with 512k of cache. (Worked fine in a regular mobo though)

Its actually 200MHz Quad pumped so actually it is 800MHz but that’s only a theoretical number. It's questionable how much of that possible theoretical or the effective bandwidth is utilized.
