i just used vegie oil on one of the northbridges fans.. (the one that died).. in an attempt to maybe get it working....
But i have doubts.... is there any possibility of veggie oil messing it up..shorting things out...

..meh.... i used Canola cooking oil.... for the hell of it... i just used my figner to dab it on....played with it for over an hour... used a q-tip to check it out a bit... (tabed it... q-tip soaked up a PILE of crap)..... re oiled it again...played with it to the extent that even a little puff would start it going...... used some good ol alchol.... cleaned up the circuit bored.... played with it some more.... put it through a wind tunnel test (lots of compressed air)... to 1: clean up and out the oil... 2:to see if it would go dry right away.... sucker musta hit over the 25,000 RPM..... figured it's fine since it just got better and better..........checked it over more..... slapped it in..... hooked it up.... and powered on.... at first it was a littleiffy...as the motor looked a tad weak......but it's smoothed right out now so much that it's quiteter and running more solid then the rest of the fans....

I'll admit I've done that before. Too lazy to even go to the garage lol. Should be fine, although some 5w30 works best.

I have a 92mm fan that started vibrating and was kind of "hung up" -it wouldn't spin freely after spinning it with your finger. I took it out and I'm waiting for a replacement (blue and red led 92mm fan)- but I would like to get this old one going again too. I have some very expensive lubricant for pro RC cars in a little syringe- I wonder if that will work? It's viscosity is a little thinner than motor oil, but not too much- it's actually made for tiny high performance bearings.. hmm, I guess I could try it- Can you take bid fans like this apart?

...... Smell..no smell... my temps are super low again...... i knew there was a problem when my temps went from 32 to 56*C..... My cpu temps went way up to.. all because of a northbridge fan?.... I don't have ANY oil around except Canola oil and this vegitable... i went for the canola as i know more of what canola is used for...

I make it a practice to add a drop of 3-in-1 motor oil to all of my fans every time i dust out my case (once a month). But I don't add more oil if the oil leaked out of the stopper from the last time i did it.

Most of my fans don't have any holes on the top- The 5000rpm 70mm on my cpu doesn't either.... I wish they did.

Yeah, come to think of it BWX, one of my old 60mm fans didn't either. But I was able to squirt some oil in the middle of the fan (where the blades attach to the center). And it definetly helped me.

..if you can...dunking the bastard fan in oil will do the trick... (did this with my kyro 2 fan).... you just gotta work it in a little and make sure it's not dripping oil all over...plenty of q-tips and rubbing alchol does the trick.... then using 2 cans of compressed air at once making the fan spin up to 25,000 rpm... will spin the residue oil right the hell outa it..... (which i did with my fan)...

I took mine apart and cleaned out the bushing- it says "bearing" on the sticker. It's no bearing, it's definitely a bushing and nothing more. But this is just a cheap fan that came with the case.
It came apart fairly easily by just pushing evenly on the fan blades until it slid right off. ![]() This is what it looked like before I took the bushing out to clean it- I just used some needle nosed pliers to take the little circle clip off, then the bushing slid right off. ![]() The bushing and circle clip.... ![]() The spindle the bearing rides on... I just cleaned it out with some Q-tips and used some bearing oil to lube it- there was a stray little copper wire inside the bushing that was causing the drag- it came form the winds of wire on the motor I imagine- there was also one of my girlfriend hairs in there-- not good for smooth bushing action. I just reinstalled it in the body (below) and it works better than any fan I have- Actually spins more freely than new- Must be I used better bearing lube... I already purchased a fan to replace this- but I couldn't throw it away before I tried to fix it- I tried to lube it without taking it apart- it was a losing battle, no way could I get to the inside of the bushing and clean it out w/o taking it apart.. I will probably throw away allot fewer fans from now on. edit- It was a 92mm case fan. I posted this in a new thread here too-- http://www.hardwareheaven.com/showthre...threadid=28993

Wow. I've never seen anyone actually do this before. That's awesome BWX. I'm betting that several of us are liking this.

Thanks, I couldn't believe it either- It just popped right off and everything worked great- I bet there will be lots of people doing this now-
Well, that's what I did for the last hour- saved a dying fan, lol *edit- building remote control cars and racing them really gave me the tools and "skill"<--(term used loosely!) to even try it- but anyone cold do this with some needle nose pliers and any kind of lube- it was really easy..

alot of the fans i've come across...you can't take appart because they are built as one... i've screwed 2 fans by pulling them appart....

Yeah, I'de only do it if you are gonna throw it away anyway- or if you have 2 identical fans and have already done it to one of them.

BMX you said.... it says "bearing" on the sticker. It's no bearing.
Actually it is a bearing... just not a Ball bearing, this is the key word when you buy fans. I dont like them sleave bearings lol. But im glad you got it going again, congrats. I too have had probs with fans especially them little GFX fans...dust doesnt take long to mess them up by trowing them off balance or slowing them down to a crawl. I quess my gripe is...i hate small fans. Oh nice fan pics BTW nice and clear. |

Thanks, webcams seem to work better close up-
Anyway-- when I used to build pro- radio control race cars (the expensive fast ones)- sometimes the cheap ones would come with brass bushings, you had to spend 80 dollars on a set of tiny high precision sealed bearings if you ever wanted to win a race... They are actual roller bearings just like in a real car, but only about 1 to 2 cm across. 2 for each wheel, 2 for each pivot point in the steering where the servo actuates it. Also the transmission gets about 7 of them. Then you put this oil in them: but it lets your car go about 5 miles an hour faster if not more with the same motor/battery combo.. What this fan has is those bushings, it is the exact same material, just more cylindrical to fit the fan. These are bushings - a solid piece. ![]() This is a bearing- made up of about 40 peices- roller nearings and the tracks they ride in (or the bearing race). ![]() See the difference? Those things in my fans are bushings.
