What are the pros/cons of fan filters?

Hi All,

I'm looking into fan filters for my system. About once a month the leading edges of the fans have a build up of junk and the stock screens get plugged up. I know this sounds like I have this in a room with a dirt floor with clay and straw walls, LOL, but it's actually just normal stuff. With four fans this system is like a vacum cleaner on steroids.
What are your ideas on filters and if I add them, should I add another fan to compensate for the cfm loss if any, these filters might create.

Thanks

Chops

I've had some serious buildup lately... i've got a grand total of 10 fan in my case... 5 in the back... only room for one in the front.... and others all over the place..... I just started using those GREEN wash scratch pads for washing dishes.... i've found them to work rather well for catching crap... but not being to hard at all to put stuff through.... i'm also tempted to double layer up some furnace filters....

Great idea Judas. I went out and looked for the scrub pads but couldn't find any, they were all sponge material. So I went to a hardware store and picked up a sheet of air conditioning filter for a window unit, 24"x 36"x1/4". Nice and porous (can feel the air flowing through it) yet dense enough to catch the airbourne crap. The sheet worked perfectly because it allowed me to cut to size the areas to cover. In addition to the fan grilles my case also has a 13.5x5" louver in the front so I was able to cut out a section to fit just right. I've been watching the temps and so far they've been 38 idle to 45-50 loaded.

Thanks again for your idea. Those ready-made fan filters run $5 to $7 @, so you saved me $30 less $2.00 for the a/c filter.

Donator
Try for 3m scotch pads, different grades are available.

It's a wire wool replacement should be available from your hardware/decorators supply stores.
I use the medium grade, funnily enough it's green like the scrub pads and the same kinda thickness etc.

It doesn't half keep my window clearer.
