Help
Guys I really need some help here.
I purchased a new Mobo, an Asus A7N8X - X, along with an AMD 300XP, and a Maxtor 120GB hard drive. I knew that in changing the Mobo and processor I would have to re-install windows, found that I had misplaced my windows disk, but found that eventually. Installed all the bits into my box, formatted and partitioned the hard drive, installed windows, then thought that I could hook up the two 40GIG hard drives I already have one at a time in order to copy the files and folders I would need to transfer to the new hard drive. No go though, I have the new hard drive set as master, and set the other to slave, but I cannot boot past the post screen, get a message about lsdr is missing. Any pointers you can give me would be really appreciated PS the new processor is showing as unrecognised CPU, I have downloaded and installe dthe latest BIOS for this board, any ideas why this would be?

I've got a 20gig Maxtor that will not allow the pc to boot if connected to the same IDE channel as an optical drive. They can be a bit wierd like that. |

I've just re-read your original post. It looks like the machine is trying to boot from the 40gig instead of the 120gig. I take it that it boots fine with just the 120gig on its own?
I can't remember what you need to do in this situation but, you probably will need them on 2 separate ide channels and then in the BIOS have a look to see if you can change the boot priority of the drives. I don't know your motherboard personally so I don't know what the particular BIOS options will be. I do reckon though that its seeing the 40gig and that drive used to have a windows partition on it and is trying to boot from that one first. If there is a certain workaround then someone will know what it is. |

pls confirm the error again, are you sure its not the "NTLDR" or "NT LDR" if it was the NTLDR, then you probably have Windows installed on the 40gig too. Can you boot the system after disconect the 40gig? |

boot you PC with the Partiton Magic rescue disks,
locate the 2nd HDD (40gig), then either 'delete' the partition or 'hide' it, but if you also need to get your files from that partition you may have to convert the partition from 'primary' to 'logical'... maybe that's too much for you, how about start all over, 1st, connect the 40gig as Master and see if you can boot into windows on this HDD, if so, let do it this way.. transfer all your needed files to a partition on the 120gig, then reinstall windows to the 120gig, there's more ways to do this.. b4 i can give you the right steps pls tell me.. Do you need to get any files from the old XP partition on the 40gig? |

Thanks paning, I cannot boot from the 40 GIG, even if it is alone and set as master, your suggestion re the use of partition magic seems to be the way to go, funny how the obvious never strikes you.

might this be a case of Windows being confused with the additional drive, because of the boot.ini file?

yes, well its kind of, there're 2 sets of boot and system files there and the 2 partitions are both primary, in this case you cannot boot into windows on the 2nd HDD while the 1st HDD is the active partition..
XP only support booting from main HDD, it does not support boot direct from 2nd HDD (win9xME do support) it means we need to have XP's boot files on one of the primary partition on the main HDD and this partition need to be active. if we modify/add an OS to the boot.ini file and boot then drive letter will change and the XP on the 2nd HDD may not work. Logla, i think he was telling me that he did tried to put the old HDD(40gig) back to 'master' and he couldnt boot from it so the Windows XP was still on the HDD at the time.
the reason why he couldnt boot into windows was/is the boot.ini file which's on the old XP partition had been modified when he had set the HDD as 'slave' and tried to boot and then got the error as stated on his very 1st posted. this can be resolved also but i dont know what/which way he went after that, i did sent a couple PMs to check with him.. whether he needs more info or not.. but no reply from him... |

Just to update you guys, i have managed to gain acces to the original windows disk, using Partition magic to convert it and then to transfer the files to my shiny new 120GIG, again thank you both.

Glad you have it sorted. i'm sure Logla would be happy too..
anyway, if you plan to use/connect the old HDD when you've done with the old XP partition, delete the partition then recreate a new ones or just format it so you wont have any prob with your current XP. |

set your bios to only boot from the newest drive big guyif the old drives have xp on em it won't matter you should be able to still go into those drives after your booted up and retrieve the files you need.

i open the setting for changing between HDD and floppy drive to boot from many times why dont i think of that as my 1st choice i'll have to relearn many things and not just think-about software systems all the time. thanks for reminding me that's another option right there and it could be easier..
