Hey guys, I don't have much experience with Intel CPUs. I just built a server for work using the Intel 3.0E Prescott CPU on the Abit IC7-MAX3 motherboard. I haven't installed Windows 2003 yet as I'm still waiting for it
, but just sitting in the BIOS screens, the CPU is running temps of 60C (+/- 1 C). It's sitting in an Antec server case with 4 case fans, plus 2 fans in the power supply. I just have the stock HSF but if I'm not overclocking, it should be doing the job. I've reseatted the HSF without any difference, and I've also updated the BIOS of the motherboard (Vers. 15) in case it was a sensor issue but that didn't change anything either.Basically, I'm wondering if this is normal temps for this CPU. I've read that they run hotter than the Northwood CPUs, but I can't seem to find any info on normal temps for this thing.

Prescotts have right off the bat.. been known to "spread the heat"..... they do run very hot even with great cooling....... Also... ABIT Boards tend to either show the temps HIGHER or Lower then they should by about 10*C.... best way to know for sure is to get a one of your own HARDWARE temp readers.... stick it on the heatsink near closest to the center of it and the closest you can get to the CPU... and see what it reads..... that way you have something to gage by (although.. expect the actual processure to be a little warmer then the gage says)

sounds like it is running to hot for whatever reason.
judas has probably got your problem pegged though. here is a link to northwood-prescott comparison at anandtech. interesting reading.- http://www.anandtech.com/cpu/showdoc.html?i=2026

Thanks guys...While the system is on, I touch the HS right near the bottom and it only feels warm to the touch so the temp readings might be off.
