samsung 710T refresh rate?

Hey guys, just got a spankin new samsung 710T LCD (12ms response time!!) but i am confused about 'optimum' and 'maximum' resolutions. The box lists the 710T as 1280X1024 @ 75hz. However in the manual and online information there are two listings:

Optimum Resolution: 1280X1024 @ 60hz
Maximum Resolution: 1280X1024 @ 75hz

What is the difference between the two, and am I going to hurt my LCD by setting it to 75hz? Elsewhere in the documentation it states that 'When using the maximum resolution do not use a refresh rate higher than 60hz'.. and that is really confusing me.

Also under windows when 'do not display refresh rates this monitor cannot display' is checked, the only two available are 60hz and 70hz. However, I unchecked it and selected 75hz since the documentation lists it as a possible refresh rate... again, am I risking hurting my LCD?

Thanks guys, really confused on this.

Are you running the display off DVI or analog? Some LCDs can benefit slightly when running on analog with the higher refresh rate but on dvi it makes no difference.

For safety's sake I would heed the warning you saw...

'When using the maximum resolution do not use a refresh rate higher than 60hz'

The implication that this is the optimum setting for this LCD should say something as well.

Note any picture differences with displayed images or screens that are familiar to you - also check some with moving images or video. Chances are though that the best overall performance is at native resolution (1280x1024) at optimum refresh (60hz).

idd, with lcd's a higher refreshrate isn't always better like it is with crt's.
on a lot of lcd's 60hz gives the best picturequality and crispyness/clarity.

thanks for the replies; I am running my laptop with a DVI cable (so digital mode). I would prefer the 75hz to give me a higher ceiling in games, but if 60 will present the best picture/clarity as well as being the best for the LCD I will retain that. Why is it advertised as 1280X1024 @ 75hz if it's best to run it at 60hz?

It is advertised to run at the the maximum resolution and refresh because the vendor generally wants to pu the best face on the specifications of the unit. For instance, at Newegg, they show this in the specifications:

Recommended Resolution1280 x 1024 @ 75Hz

Samsung's own site simply states that the unit will run at 1280x1024, but does not mention the refresh rate at that resolution.

It's always best to check the manufacturer's site for the most reliable documentation. This description at Newegg may be a mistake, a marketing decision, or just a description of it's highest capability - whether it's best for the monitor or not. And Newegg is a reputable vendor...
