My AMD64 FX-53 has died
Sup,
I got some very sad news... it's been a hard day to get through... it all started around 14:00 today. I had just fed the neighbours cat, as they are away on vaction and i thought I'd do them a favour and look after it! The cat had been pestering me all morning for attention, so I went into the kitchen to feed her, hoping to get some quiet time, I refilled my glass of coke, as it's been 37 degrees centigrade today here in South Australia and I was dehydrating as the air con as broke. I headed back to my pc which was in assembled out of the case on the desk as i was cleaning the motherboard, case and fans, I placed my glass of coke on the desk next to my mouse. The phone rang and I got up to answer it, this phone call should not have been answered... As I was on the phone the cat walzed into my study were the computer lives. She knows to stay out - it's a no cat zone, the door is always kept closed, but on this one occasion I closed it too with my foot as I walked out to answer the phone. I kept my eye on the cat, but before I could react she ran into the study, I quickly put the phone down and as I entered the room my heart sank... she had jumped onto the desk and knocked over the glass of coke, which which fell on my mobo and cpu. The cat looked at me and ran, it's almost as if they know that their end is drawing nigh too. I sat around for an hour pondering if I should turn it on to see if its ok, in the end I did. For the first second, it all powered up , and then there was a small puck sound and a burning plastic smell. My pc screen turned off and the room went deadly silent. I could hear my heart beat though like a jack hammer . The fans inside my case still work, but the CPU fan and hard drives wont power-on. I feel numb, cold and very lonely. The girlfriend is not very understanding as she hates my PC. She probably trained that evil cat to knock off my PC. ![]() P.S If anyone has a way of fixing my CPU and mobo I shall donate my ATI 9800 PRO as a gesture of thanks. Here is a pic of the little shit:

Its a little late now but you should really have cleaned the board and cpu first and took your time, now something has blown there is virtually no chance you will get it replaced as this would fall outside the warranty limitations.
Did you spill coke on both CPU and mobo and just turn it on after the accident? did the coke get over the cpu pins? need more info. |

The CPU has coke on it, the fan was off at the time - coz I was cleaning it, the pins around were the CPu sits are sticky, the glass was a tall glass, so it pretty much covered the circuits around the cpu.
I forgot to mention that I did attempt to clean the board with a damp cloth, but it was just too sticky, as the transistors were swimming in the coke. |

Should've tried washing it all off in De ioised water and then gently baking it dry. You should never energise electronics with residues on the pcb's.
Sorry about your loss...Are you sure the cpu is actually dead? |

I shall take the CPU into work on Monday, as we have A64's as our base models for The Defence. And since I am the support tech I can find a spare around the lab.
I knew I should have left it alone, it was just bugging me for so long - not knowing if i was cactus. |

that sucks....but I'm afraid that your motherboard is dead for certain......the CPU may be salvageable though. And if your girlfriend hates yer PC...it might be time to get a new one of those too

high consantrated Alcahol will do the trick... i found a motherboard that apparently had been swimming in coke for quite some time..... older motherboard.. the ram the cpu and motherboard were both sticky and gaud awfully layered thick with it... (some dolt put the case in a large cooler with a bunch of coke and ice.. and apparently the bag holding the coke was cut which popped a whole in the 2 liter bottles of pop... spewing it out into the cooler filling the case up slowly... now why the case was in the cooler in the first place i don't know.... they were traveling.... that's as much as i know.... the dolt just handed me the stuff and that's all he told me)
anyways.... i went and bought 2 1 liter bottles of alchoal and a box of q-tips and cotton swabs.. 2 and a half hours later... i had a P3 900... a pretty slick Asus motherboard... and 256mb of ram.... not bad for 12 bucks! the CPU was probably the hardest to get really clean though..... as all those pins and trying to get between them was absalute murder... although the DIMM and pci/agp slots are also a bitch to... i pretty well just soaked the motherboard..... then used compressed air to blow em out good... BTW.. i use compressed air to dry it somewhat.. then let it sit for about 6 or 7 hours...... before putting it all back together

Wow, cute cat, but I'm not sure if it would have a head after that little stunt
I hope that the cpu works at work for you.

![]() Oh man, you must've put a jinx on me, after posting my reply I started a tear down of my rig to put the MSI K8N neo2 Platinum in after I adjusted an Asetek VGA block to fit the NB, and got the newer GPU block. After redoing all the hoses I started the pump (luckily I have a pump overide switch fitted so I can run the pump without PSU power) to my complete horror there was water pissing out of the CPU block t piece. I reckon about 100ml leaked berore I cut the power and smothered the board in bog roll. Well after a quick mop up and two hours of a hairdryer blowing on the cpu area I am happy to say all is well. ![]() I sincerely hope your processor is OK and wish you luck. |

Nahh Dog aint required bud, you have several options:
Option 1: Shotgun or sniper rifle if your l33t. Option 2: Water Pistol (They hate water) I will find time to forgive this cat, but it isnt going to be within the next few days
