USB card reader makes my system hang
I got a USB card reader, and it makes my system hang on POST. After about 2 or 3 min. it will eventually cycle through the POST screen and boot into windows. But I was wondering if any of you guys think it may be a BIOS option that i'm overlooking or what, cuz this kind of stuff normally doesn't happen. My friend has the exact same USB card reader and his system goes through POST no problem. Our systems are pretty similar
He has ABIT MAX III, p4 3.0C, 1Gb Corsair XMS Pro DDR500, eVGA 6800GT, 2 x 36Gb raptors in RAID 0, and 1 x WD 160 as back up. Here's a pic of the Card reader's box. ![]() I bought it at work, and i guess it's discontinued or something because it doesn't show up on the website anymore. Anybody have any ideas as to why it makes my system hang on the POST? |

i think it's made by JC com or something like that. It connects to 3 USB headers of my MoBo, and uses up one of the fire wire headers of my board as well

Hmm . . . try disabling " USB in DOS " support?
Just a shot in the dark.

probably a silly question, but you haven't got any cards in the reader at all when trying to boot?
I got a little 7 in 1 reader and if I leave a CF or SD card in after reboot (not a cold boot though) the machine will just hang in POST. |

well, i've been looking around in my BIOS, and i didn't see any "USB DOS support" anywhere in there. But i did disable the "boot from other device" option, and that didn't help either. I had the HDD boot priority on "other bootable device" instead of my 36Gb raptor, changed it to my raptor and that didn't help either.
I don't have any cards in the card reader when i boot up. I really like the card reader because my case doesn't have built in front USB, but this card reader supports two USB, one FireWire, and 7 different typs of memory cards. |

mmm one solution to the post hang is to not turn the computer off at all…
but i can;t think to why a USB device would affect the post

I have to turn off my computer. My dad gets mad if i leave it on.....he goes on like a mad man saying "leaving your computer on is a waste of energy." Believe me, if i had it my way, the only time my system would be off would be when i play around it's insides.

Umm... are you sure you hooked it up right?
You relise with some boards you can not use the front and back USB @ the same time?

yea, it's all plugged in the right way. There's only one way to plug anything in really.
BTW.....before i had purchased another card reader, a cheapo $10 one, and it did the same thing. So i bought another one (the one i have now) because i thought "well, i got what i paid for" and now i'm still having the same problem. |

I've been having a problem with a 6in1 card reader that I have too. On a cold boot, it will take like 30-45 seconds longer to boot and the card reader will show as an "unknown device". If I reboot, it will come up fine. I just figure maybe it has something to do with the fact that it's an older USB 1.0 reader and my system is all USB 2.0, or the accursed "VIA USB issue" rearing it's ugly head again. Whatever, I just unplugged the darn thing. I don't really use it anyway.
I also have NO cards in the reader when it pulls this crap. It just plugs into one of the USB headers on the motherboard and resides in a 3.5 bay. |
