Cooler doesn't try to det CPU below 60C

Hi! I've got an Athlon64 3000+ with box cooler and MSI K8T Neo Motherboard. I've noticed that my CPU's idle temperature is 60C (C'n'Q is off), or at least that's what the reading says. I opened the side panel and made some cold draft to see what would happen, and, instead of the temperature, the fan speed started to drop, all the way to about 3300, which is more or less as low as it gets with box cooling. Is this normal? Could it be that the MB is reporting higher themperature than it is (although I don't know how the fan could know that)?

either youve got bogus temp readings or did a horrible job of installing your HS.

ive got a nice aftermarket HS and i idle at 29-31C with my A64 3200+.
from what ive heard, the stock HS that comes with the 64's is actually pretty decent.

Unless the boxed coolers have started coming with temperature sensors, wich I doubt, there is some feature on your motherboard or software that causes the varying fan speed behavior. Check that out and make sure that there are some case fans that improve the overall temperature in the system, wich it sounds like there could be room for improvement.

LOL buddy, Amd runs a fair amount cooler than Intel...espacially the A64's vs Presshots..

IvanV i suggest you try and re-mount the HSF and apply some AS, it can very well do the trick...or even better get a Thermalright Hsf like the xp-90 or even the xp-120(if it's compatible with your motherboard)

If your useing a after market fan/cooler then it's a themo controlled fan (they for the most part suck).

If your useing the stock AMD cooler you either have a bad fan or your bios is set up improperly.... should be the latter... look for a feature in you bios should be callled
Fan Thermal/Throttling or simular turn it off make sure it's disabled

other wise your fan speed depends on cpu/case temps it's part of acustic management to try to make your pc quieter

Yea, who wants a CPU that runs cooler and faster and cost less then intel.
wait a minute I do!

I sence a little AMD64 envy considering it totally owns far better then what you have now

hahahaah.....that's such a lie . My pressHOT runs 55C° idle, where as an Athlon64 runs easily 20C° cooler idle than my chip . And i've got hella good cooling (for air).....the next best thing i could get would be either water cooling or vapo-chill .

Wow idoling at 55C.I've just recently reseated/reinstalled with some AS ceramic (I'm sure it has not setup yet) and 55C is about the max I've seen my temps go and that was in a very warm room.

Thank tou all for so many replies! There is an explanation for the varying fan speed: apparently, it takes in account the case temp as well, so, when the case air temperature starts dropping, it lowers the fan speed, keeping the CPU on the same temperature. I've noticed similar behaviour when I start to heat it. I already installed a couple of fans to draw the air out, and it greatly improved my "burn" temperatures. It used to get as hot as 80C CPU and 50C case after only 15 minutes of Prime95 (I didn't dare test any further). Now it gets stable at 74-75C CPU and 43C case after a much longer period with 27C ambient so I guess I gained about 10C.
Now, since I come from the stone age (my previous computer had an AMD K6-2 @ 400MHz) I have to ask a really dum question: How do I get the heatsink of the retention mechanism? I unfastened the fix lever so that the hooks no longer hold the heatsink fastened to the retention mechanism, and now what? I only see a couple of screws on the retention mechanism that hold it to the backplate (and if I remove them, the backplate will fall into the case) and nothing else. So please help Fred Flinstone!

on the Athlon 64 set ups, the backplate they have (if installed properly), will be stuck to the MoBo. On the backplate, the side pressing against the MoBo will have a sticker so that you will not encounter that problem of the backplate falling off when you change out the heatsink.

Thanks! Yes, the instructions do mention a sticker, I overlooked that. I thought, since installing instructions contain a picture with retention mechanism installed, but without the heatsink, that it also comes off separately.

Yep. That's my average idle temps . I've got the Thermalright sp-94 heatsink, an 80mm tornado, and AS5 (that has already settled in). Prescotts do run quite warm. But the flux temps between idle and load are only about 15C° (on mine at least, don't know about everybody else).

I'm pretty sure it takes AS 5 about two weeks for it to settle in.

Have you tried updating your motherboard's BIOS? It's quite possible that it is simply reading the temperature incorrectly.

Contrary to what some others have suggested, Athlon64 stock fans ARE indeed temperature-controlled, no motherboard intervention needed. I think your fan is operating just as it should.
Mine, at idle (33ºC CPU/mobo) is about 3300rpm, and of course goes faster when under load.

If it works, don't fix it!

Today, I tried to get the heatsink of the CPU. As I said, it simply wouldn't come off when I unclasped the hooks that were supposed to hold it, so I unscrewed the retention, since I was told that the backplate should be sticked to the motherboard. Well, the CPU didn't come off, but the backplate did! The brainiacs didn't stick it! (I'm so pissed off at those guys, they also put my hdd and dvd on the same ide channel (didn't even give me the second cabel) and all of the hardware (hdd, dvd, floppy and (broken) graphic card) on the same PSU rail.) I had to entirely disassemble the PC, which was a new expirience for me. Fortunately, all went fine. I gave up getting the heatsink off the CPU, but I'd just like to know how it's done. Apparently, they sticked it with some thermal paste. (Or perhaps it's Super Glue?!)
I've also decided to believe that the sensors are reporting too high values, and not do anything about it. (I decided to take the advice from the title of the post.) The heatsink is barely warmer than my body temperature (I think no more than 1-2C), and I don't think the CPU should be 20C warmer. (If someone knows better let me know.) Thank you for all of your replies so far.
