are Highpoint RAID cards: crap?
I was curious how much RAID cards go for, and was browsing some SATA cards.
Anyway, the Highpoint I looked at was less than $100, while comparable Promise and Adaptec cards were over $200. So, is Highpoint crap? |

Highpoint does makes some decent cards. They've been around for a while. Lots of onboard RAID chips were Highpoints.
Which models are you looking at? THG did a review of cards a while back. http://www6.tomshardware.com/storage...625/index.html |

I used to have a few highpoint cards. Never had any issues. They have good linux support, and work very well.

Currently i DWELL on the highpoint because i'm absalutely shocked at how damn excellently they preform. I can NOT say i've delt with ADD-IN boards, but i've used majority of the onboard variation. Abit seemed to like them, and they "plan" and getting highpoint again as soon as some Sata 2 300 and other highpoint tech goes through it's paces.
I've used the HPT366, HPT370, and HPT372 and 374 (currently i've two machines with the 374 which from the results i've got sitting here, with IDE ATA133, beating out "superior" products with budget drives. Not to mention thier massive stripe length/width. Highly configurations. ATM, i've 2 drivers in MASTER mode, 2mb maxtor 40gb, they are preforming with LESS CPU usage and with faster read and writes then 2 8mb 80gb WD SATA 150 on a via chipset (they are NOT raptors) i've tried these drives on another raid array chipset, preformance is nearly cut by a 1/4

Thanks for the replies.
Reading that THG link, I think I have an idea why that Highpoint card was so cheap . . . I think it probably doesn't have the on-board XOR processor (I can't tell from Newegg's description.) Any way, I was just curious why that one card would be so cheap compared to the others.
