How to set up a modem/router,..Help!!!
I have been haveing some severe problems with my broadband,..mostly loss of speed,..A week ago for about the 3rd time my telephone company with whom I have DSL sent out a service tech to check my lines,..he hooked up some type of meter and said after a few seconds everything was alright I had 1472???
and was only using about 22% of my total bandwith,..the problem is this,..according to my service plan I should be realisticly getting about 1.3/1.4mb of download speed,..but am only getting about between 300.0kbps to maybe 600.0kbps,..he installed a new westell 6100 modem and hooked it up to my Linksys router, replaced all the ethernet cabling between devices and ran some speed test,..seems I am getting the slow speeds as the signal comes through the modem the tech didnt seem to understand this,..I ask him how the modem and router should be hooked up,..he was very vage on this. I hope some one here can help me with this as I don't really understand a lot about the differences in hook up. My current set up for these is this: Modem set to bridged ethernet (but still listed as DHCP Sever) Router set to PPPoE MTU of 1492 (wont get any higher with out a warning from Windows. But router is set to being a DHCP server to??? If I change the router to obtain a static IP address automaticly and set the modem to PPPoE I can still connect but same speed problem. Any suggestions would be appreciated as if I call modem tech support they tell me to call Linksys and vice versa,..

Some interesting info (NB. This is for the BellSouth Westell, which is apparently not the same as the retail - but the principles should be similar, even if it's not the BellSouth) It may be as simple as needing to tweak RWIN, though if it's taken a sudden dive, you may need to keep watch on the modem logs, line quality/errors etc. |

Thanks for your reply Matth,I checked it out and had a long talk with Linksys tech support,.. got everything connected correctly and still no speed,..had bellsouth come out again and they said my line was damn good,..then the tech realized what my problem was :a bad port on bellsouth's end,..long story short they hooked me up to a new port and bam speed back to normal.

also be forwarned..... a 10mb wan port on a router will limmit your overall speeds.. so consider that fact that if you get a faster net connection.. your router will become more of a factor.... at which point a 100mb wan port on a router will be something you'll need...
It may be another year before a 1000mb wan port is available..... Xincom are on it
