Help me with my old comp
Hi guys,
Just moved into a new home (I'll post some pics in another thread). The problem is, when I went to hook up the old comp, it start up, but nothing happens. Let me elaborate. The system is an old Dell XPS x600r (or something like that). I get everything put together and push the power button, the system turns on, the monitor doesn't display anything and the speakers dont do anything either. The system just sits, you can't hear the processor cracking or anything and it just runs, fans spinning. I don't think it is booting windows, or maybe not even posting. Also, when you push the power button to turn the system off, it emidiately turns back on sometimes, not always, but you have to be gentle taking your hand away. This is something that is not really new, when have always had problems with the on/off button. The system is not in the best shape, but it always ran quite well for being that old. Specs are as follows, P3 700mhz, 128mb ram, rage 128 pro (with a wopping 16mb ram), running win xp home with the latest drivers and bios updates and a fairly fresh formate. I don't use the system for much other than internet and the ocasional diablo 2, it more my daughters and wifes. Anyone have any idea what the hell is going on? Give me any advise, I need it. Thanks.

Home sounds PSU/MB related to me. I'm learning towards the MB since it sounds like there is something wrong with the timing circuit that does the startup.

ATM, it won't boot to windows at all, basically the power comes on, stays on and nothing happens. I turn the computer on, the fans run, and thats it. The monitor doesnt even kick on and neither do the speakers.

yea, it might be your MoBo or memory then. If you have some memory lying around that will work in that system, try that out if possible. if that doesn't work, then it probably is the MoBo that has gone out.

yea man. it would be best to invest money into a new system than to try and fix that older one. No need to spend money on older components when you can spend the same amount or less on a completely new one.

right. The system was given to my wife years ago, and was actually pretty top notch, but all thing must pass. Luckly I can get an interest free computer loan through work, and they will take like $10 a week out of my check, so I might do that, we'll see. Thanks for the help anyway.
