You'd be surprised, but if the there is only one hard drive on the cable, whether it be primary or secondary, is bootable, and you have the bios set to boot to the hard drive first, in most cases it will boot just fine. Some bioses will boot to the first bootable hard drive it finds, while some allow you to pick. I've worked on PCs where Windows 2000/XP installed just fine, and ran beautifully on a drive that was set to slave, or where the hard drive was set to 'Cable Select' mode (default on most drives these days), and connected to the middle (slave) connector. I didn't even notice it myself until I looked in the bios. -Tip |

With 2000 and XP and i do beleive ME works very similarely... It sets up the MBR with an ID for each ( multi/disk/rdisk/partition ). With that information, it then sets what is bootable, what will be loaded from were.
So if you have say for example, Have HD set as Primary Master with a single partition. You have to have your Bios set to boot from the Primary or enable "Boot Other Devices" as the MBR will be held on that drive. At which point you can boot move that drive to any channel you wish... or as a slave...as long as the bios is able to load up on that channel.

Ok, so I'll run with 2 cables because I'm not much of BIOS guy.
If this is going in a Thermaltake Shark, you guys think I need 10" or 18" Cables? |

basically, if your mounting them in the bottom portion of the case, 10" should be plenty... 18" if your mounting them in the top portion....
best guess would be to take note of were the motherboard has it's connectors... and were you'll be putting the hardrives... I myself could do with 4 inch cables if i wanted..

Sorry if it's already been answered (haven't time to read the whole thread) but would it be ok to cut down an ide cable to one device only? or do I really need the slave AND master connections where they are on the cable? IE slave centre and master end?
