thermal paste I think you mean. you can buy it in most computer stores and it doesnt cost much. No I certainly would not use toothpaste, it will dry up and the thermal transfer will fail. go to your hardware store or order some online.

Some people did try toothpaste, and although at first it did work.... it doesn't take long to dry up and fry your cpu.

If you are wondering what kind of thermal paste you'd like to know that is excellent. I'd suggest Arctic Silver Ceramique.

Most stores carry Arctic Silver products, and Ceramique should be in good supply. It's extremely safe and preforms considerably well.

Ceramique is a good paste yes, good for people who tend to be sloppy putting it on also. I prefer AS5, always have.

AS5 is great, but it's also something that someone that hasn't applied thermal paste at all or regularly.

I just recieved another of the large tubes of AS5... mine was getting pretty low, and it generally takes about a week for tubes to get here after I order them unless I pay extra for shipping.

To be completely honest, i have never seen much difference between AS5 and ceramique. Maybe 1-2°C at most....

Tape is pretty much a solid.... a softy though...

it's all one the law of physics and thermal dynamics....

a pasty "liquid" vs a soft solid. Liquid easily fills into the little holes and cracks in a surface, a solid however doesn't do that at all well.....

That's why a thermal tape is not nearly as good... and can be possible cause for overheating....

If you are hard up for thermal grease (can't afford it, or whatever the reason), and if you ask real polite like, Intel may send you a free thermal pad or applicator that has thermal grease in it. Not the greatest stuff, but it works. Whenever I get parts directly from them I have them throw in a few packets of thermal pads or applicators for whenever I need to remove/replace a heatsinks often, or if a cheap customer wants some 'free' paste (why should I have to give up my AS5 to them, hmm?!?). Check out their site HERE .

Dude, like the people here said, putting on toothpaste as a tim is a very bad idea in the long run.

Here's a good comprehensive guide that can help you put the stuff on if you've never done it before, I like to use a credit card to get the stuff nicely layed out, but you don't have to use my techniques.
