Help with USB2

My son has A ASUS P4B Board http://usa.asus.com/prog/spec.asp?m=P4B&langs=09#
and his case has 2 usb ports from the side i have connected it to the boards USB2 but its not working. Can someone help me out please.
Is there any software i have to install? i dont have any. please help needed.

No software.

Wired USB port troubles are usually a problem with the layout - there are several "standard" layouts that don't match, or if they finish in individual pin connections, there are a whole new set of ways to get it wrong - some of them could also do damage!

There may be a motherboard jumper to enable the port set, or to switch a set from the backplate to the pins - but with only two backplate and a header, this is unlikely.

In some instances, apart from the 2 sets of 4, there may be an extra wire (chassis ground) but a different function on the extra pin - in whaich case, leave it unconnected

No software needed like Matth said. I'd check if you put the wires in right. Check the way you put the wires in against what it says in the motherboard manual.

USB might be disabled in the Bios too.

i have to install some separate usb drivers off of my mobo disc if i use xp sp1 (which i do), without them they dont work, so software can be involved

I followed the P4B diagram and the color codes exactelly as shown but again no good

on the cd that came with my motherboard it included various drivers, one of which was for the USB controller. ive had a quick look at asus' web site and cant find the one for your motherboard, have you stil got the cd that came with your sons mobo?

hmm, i cant find specific usb drivers for you, two things you can try

http://www.asus.com.tw/support/downl...e=P4B&Type=All
and get the Intel(R) Chipset Software Installation Utility V5.02.1003. run it and see if if updates anything

other thing is
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com
id do this anyway since its good to update it, and look out for anything usb related

Do the backplate USB ports work ok?
If they work, then the software/driver side is 100% ok, if they don't, then the software/drivers side is where the problem is.

Just looked at a manual download - implementation is a 4pin side by side, SAME way - if the rear panal mports work, then double check your wiring ... For one port, V+. D-, D+ 0v addjacent, the other port running the same way

im still a little confused, do the usb ports on the back (the ones by the mouse / keyboard ports) work properly?
