Heatsink stuck
I use artic silver to keep my heatsink to my cpu. I need to switch motherboards and remove the CPU, but the heatsink won't come off when I pull on it. Is there anything special I have to do to undo the artic silver bond?
Yes the heatsink is unhooked, no they won't come out together (I can't reach the arm to unlock the cpu) specs below. thanks!

Hmm some times you can try wiggling but don't apply too much force. However, you can also use a flat edged object...a stiff piece of paper or something to wedge in between the processor & heatsink. Just take your time and it will eventually come off.

It finally came off. What made it difficult is the brace that is present on the mobo. It prevents me from doing full twists and wiggling wasn't really working. I only had about a half an inch of free space. With enough force and twisting it eventually came out though, no damage to the cpu (as far as I can tell).
thanks for the reply!

All I will say is........FOR GODS SAKE BE CAREFUL. Ive swapped my heatsink more than a few times and at least 5 occasions Ive managed to yank the heatsink off with the processor stuck to the bottom of it. It's no wonder really that my processor is in hospital at the moment sans one of his tiny little pins
. I totally understand the problems you having it not being helped by the tightness of the stock bracket on most motherboards. All I can recommend is you wiggle it like a loose tooth as much as you can for as long as you can bare it gently pulling it at the same time. I must admit on the occasions the processor has came away with the HS there has been no damage and I believe my pin loss was caused when I fumbled it but I guess I cant be 100%.Anyway enough rambling and goodluck. |

It's nothing specific for that thermal paste though, it's the large surface area of these A64/P4 CPU's that makes it possible for a vaccuum force to build up. It's not unusual for it to get so strong that it could pull a CPU out of the socket even with the latch hooked on, but I'd rather gently twist the heatsink off than to pull right out.

I find that putting the cpu under extreme load makes the paste more pasty, and easier to remove.

I've found that OCZ thermal paste has none of the stickyness problem, and is virtually as effective as AS5.
Usually, I try and unlock the cpu, and just jam a screwdriver between it and the heatsink to pry them apart.
