modem problem....pls help

i have a compaq presario 5000 and some my hd crashed. i tried using the recovery disk but cannot reinstall the original setup. i was forced to reformat my hd and reinstall windows 98se. i got the video and sound devices working except for the modem. using add/remove hardware, it always says "cannot load installer (modem.cpl) for wdm modem. please contact...." i checked my modem card is says pctel pct789t-c and downloaded the driver but the same thing happened. tried the following:

- remove modem the reboot. reinstall modem
- move the modem to another pci slot.
- checked the registry

please help me. i've been trying to make it work for weeks now. thanks.

does the drivers comes with an installer program?
have you tried using Add Hardware wizard?
can't remember exact steps and words that says in the wizard of Windows 98, but you would choose to install the devices from a list then don't search, i'll choose.... and then select Have disk and browse to where the drivers files are saved and select the one that matchs your modem...

If you still aren't having any luck with that you may just want to purchase a new modem. I bet you could find one for around $10-$20 US somewhere.

the modem is pre-installed with the computer. i have downloaded the driver of the pctel but it does not work either. just as you said, i tried using the wizard to install the device but the result are the same.

i've read in other websites that there are problems with the computer (especially compaq presario) once you reformat the harddisk. i think there are something needed to do in windows to make it work. but these are some special cases for certain brands of computer.

pls help me. thanks

thanks for your reply. i don't think the modem itself is the problem. the modem is working fine before the computer crashed. as i have said in my other post, there are problems when the you reformat the harddisk, installing win98 and making the devices work.

i'm also thinking of buying another modem but the problem is what if it has the same result. i will be back again to square one.

thanks again.

Just figured that after weeks of trying it would be worth a shot to try different hardware. I would have done that on about day 3.

Hope it works out for you. Of course you could just ditch the dial up and get a broadband connection. No more dial-up= no need for a modem.

one thing that i can think of atm, which i'm not sure about this at all, but as you've mentioned that you reformat the hard drive, so you might need to re-install the product shared library, as this may be a requirement for the system. if so, the original shipping drivers should have included it. you would need to check with Compaq to see if the system is actually needed it.
another thing that just came up, you could try to uninstall the sound device drivers, and then try installing the modem device first and if it can be installed then later install the sound device. check these out.

System Specs

What model Compaq Presario, and is the modem on a card (takes up a slot) or is it integrated into the mainboard? I've got one (my home unit below is an upgraded Presario 5000...). Give the full model (like 5WV261 - or like that...) - OK? Mine worked ok under 98, still does. Maybe I have the file.
