AMD possibly upgrade time
Ok so wife needs an upgrade so thinking of passing my p4 550 to her.... and getting my self something new. Was considering an AMD but not sure. What would be about the same performance level as a p4 550.... I do alot of gaming and video editing. Should i stick with Intel and just buy her the new system since mine is still pretty top notch or is there a good AMD 64 that will not break my wallet. She has a p4pe with a 2.4 ghz p4 and 1 gig of single channel ddr 333.

For gaming Athlon64 is the way to go but in video editing Intel has the hand ...

If you want my recommendation, get the AMD Athlon X2 3800+ and overclock modestly to 2.4 GHz with stock cooling. (It won't even get as hot as a Prescott)

if $150 is your budget, then keep your 550, and buy your wife a new rig. I'm only saying this because you do video editing. Would you use your rig only for gaming, then i'd say go AMD.

If you have a $150 limit, then you might as well just keep what you have. Even going to the P4 531 (64-bit) down from a P4 550 wouldn't help.

I'd say go with the best Dual core AMD has (if you can afford it). Intel used ot be king of multi tasking, when AMD started using dual core, it kick Intel right out the door, Intel fanboys will tell you to stay intel, but AMD is the best for gaming, period. Dual core will help a lot with video editing (especially if you use alot of different programs).

If you pass the 550 to your wife now (or even a couple months from now...) you'll need to stick with Intel, processor wise, to stay under the $200.00 mark for a processor that'll do your video editing well. The best way to go overall would be the X2 Athlon - but it's way out of your price range and will be for many months yet...
Upping the budget a 100.00 on the processor opens some possiblities (250.00 has been a long standing sweet spot for processor pricing for years...) and would only increase the price of your overall (new) replacement system by 10% or less... I would recommend that, unless you really just want to "get by" for a year or so...

think about it, havin those extra couple seconds or extra min for video editing really doesn't matter. But if your goin to do any type of gaming, the AMD will help out a lot.

I'd say save up and let your wife share your system when she needs the power. Then you get a better system.
Often times, tweener upgrades leave you short on the bigger ones. |
