System Specs

New MB for a p4 2.4 (400 fsb)

Ok so i need to upgrade wifes system and decided her processor is fine for now but her MB is really the slow part. (ie i have $200 to upgrade with and can not afford more). So currently she has a p4pe asus board with 4 x agp and single channel memory no sata.

I found this http://www.asus.com/products4.aspx?m...=3&l2=12&l3=31

It would give duel channel... work with the older processor and even has 8 x agp as she has a x800 pro. This with a SATA hard drive should do me wonders i think...

But i wanted some input. I am also getting her a 160 sata drive to increase the system. That is all i can afford. What do you guys think?

Unavailable to me here in Norway but if your gonna replace a S478 might as well go for the best Dual channel with PAT SATA and Gb Lan
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813127152

I just ordered a regular IC7(my old Gigabyte the Missus is using is popping a Cap) IC7-G is far to expensive here and the MAX is the top of line one and the best S478 chipset there was.

AH yes and the one that my Missus will inherit(easier to not format hers as same chipset) the IS7 I use now(also SATA, dual channel with PAT)

Can you tell I like Abit LOL(just think they do a quality job on this generation of MoBos minus their silly NB fans which can be removed and have no use anyway as Intel NB dont get hot anyway)

I like abit but partial my self to asus... just wondering if i will see a HUGE increase from single channel to duel, 4 x agp - 8 x agp and from pata to sata?

Well the dual channel will make difference the PAT again is about 25% lower latency but the if the MoBo is using the Intel SATA controller you wont see a huge difference as it really doesnt run it in "true" SATA I get about 119 Mbs burst speed. The Asus P4P800 Deluxe is the Asus flavour of 865PE board with the PAT enabled which also has SATA

I didn't think that the 865PE chips had PAT. I believe it started with the 875 chipsets, like in the P4C800s.

In most cases yes you are right Tulcakelume but there were a few in the 865PE series that snuck thru the IS7 was one of them heres a good article on 865PE PAT boards it really does make a great difference in the Latency, in the Everest Latency Benchmark I rate just under the Opteron (impressive to me being just under AMDs)in latency and top in Read and 3 in write speeds

heres a shot when I was only running 1 gig with a 215FSB(also you can see the ASUS one is in that list as well)
