CPUs supported by SiS730 chipset

As mobo on my old PC, which I used mostly as a typewriter, finally fell apart, I'm trying to replace things at as low cost as possible. I can get my hands on a SiS730 mobo, but I've got no idea what CPUs it supports. I know that it supports old Athlons and Durons, but those are so old they almost can't be found, so I'd like to know if it supports 266MHz FSB AthlonXPs.

Depends on the BIOS, but with any luck, it should support 266FSB XP's, maybe the "new" Duron's (1400, 1600, 1800).

One grave reservation, it's a SDRAM chipset, so unless you already have a stock of PC133 memory, you'll be paying over the odds for slow RAM, when there are cheap motherboards that will take DDR memory that is now cheaper than SDRAM.

I know about SDRAM, I've got some left from my "deceased" K6-2 system (it was literally a typewriter). I've checked out old articles on the chipset but they were older than AthlonXPs so they didn't have the information. Thanks!

What motherboard is it, there should be a model number somewhere?

If the old RAM is PC100, you'll lose a bit of performance, and if it's PC66, you may not be able to use it.

The older "Palomino" cored XP's tend to be more compatible with older motherboard versions - I believe the newer thouroughbred cores (and also the "new duron") can be problematic on old motherboard revisions - in many cases, there are two versions of the same motherboard, with the later one updated for better support of newer CPUs - votage regulators, bus drivers etc. The older Thunderbird Athlons had more forgiving timing and signal requirements, and this has tightened with every generation since.

If you want a basic system, I'd be more inclined to look at surplus system units, as one thgat is well below current spaecifications, but still quite usable can be very cheap indeed - for a complete box, with everything in it, and maybe even the OS and licence thrown in (but no media).
