New HDD support...?
Helo folks...
Apparently, my HDD is mentally defected...why? well, it has some bad sectors that decrease it from 40GB to 33GB It givs me alot of problems so I need to buy a new one. the thing is, I don't know if my MB supports it! My mother board is: http://www.asus.com/products.aspx?l1...99&modelmenu=1 So, I know it doesn't support SATA (Am I right?) so I need to get an ATA, but, ATA100 or ATA133? Which one is better and will my MB support it? I'm getting only 80Gig with 7200RPM (Couldn't find 80Gig with 10000RPM) and 8mb Cache (Couldn't find 80Gig with 16mb Cache). So, I think the ideal will be 80Gig with 10000RPM and 16mb Cache, though I cannot find one. But the real question is: ATA133 or ATA100? Will it work on my MB?

first of all, there are no such thing as 80Gb IDE HDDs that support the 10k. It's just not going to happen (if anytime soon, it will be w/the SATA HDDs sometime in the future). from the looks of the board, it doesn't seem to support any SATA at all.
As far as ATA100 vs. ATA133, there really is no difference as long as you get any HDD w/a minimum of 8Mb cache. There are some IDE HDDs out there though (i think by Maxtor) that are IDE and have a 16Mb cache. |

Any new IDE (ATA) hard drive should work for you. You may have to go through an extra step or two to get the new drive partitioned and formatted if it is bigger than 137Gb, but that shouldn't be a problem - there are posts here to tell you how to do that if you are unsure.
Everyone here has some preference as to brand - I like the Seagates and Western Digital drives - but I now use a Maxtor that runs well - and the Samsungs of late are good drives too.
