Good Temps for Athlon X2 4400
Hey guys, I'm new to high end desk tops. Its also the first time I built a machine for myself. What are good temps for an Athlon X2 4400+? I noticed in the limited testing I did last night that they stay around 35c, maybe a bit more with FEAR demo running. Performance is good, but I'm nervous I didn't do the thermal compound well enough. Any other things I can do to get some comfort, all help is appreciated.
edit: Also I have stock HSF and I dont OC, thanks. edit again: I first got a warning after post that the fan wasn't running fast enough, it seemed OK to me, the bios had a warning set to go if fan dropped below 12000rpm. It starts more at 9000-11000 (somewhere in the middle) adn get fasted when it needs to. I just changed the warning to 800rpm. Good idea or not, big thing or not? |

35C is fine for that processor. It sounds like you did just fine with the paste.

Your paranoid mate
Well usualyl if it overheats, you'd feel TONS of heat coming out of the PC

Actually thats the opposite, alot of heat coming out isn't necessarily a problem. If you insulate the core it'll fry without much heat being expelled from the HSF. If it overheats because of not enough exhausting thats one thing, but I've seen a "cold running" PC fry from core insulation |

It's fine, mine sits around 32-36 depending on room temp, and then goes up to 40c at full load.

Mine sits at around 28*C.... under load i've yet to see it go above 34-35*C
The other day i pushed it to the limits on all the hardware and software ... ran UT2004, Lineage2, CounterStrike Source, an a pile of other progs at the same time, i must say, it chewed through them like they were butter. Smooth as silk... still never pushed over 34-35*C currently using XP-90C with a 2500rpm 92mm fan (nothing special)

The max temp for this proc, according to AMD spec sheet, is 65 degree so you should not worry about temp until it reach 50+ degree ...
If you want to be sure that your proc never go over a certain temp you can set a limit in the bios ( on most motherboard ) that shut down the PC if it reach that temp. If there is no setting for this in the bios or you dont want to mess with it you can also use a program like motherboard monitor 5 ( freeware ) and set the max temp you want , when this temp is reached this app will alert you with a noisy beep .

I've been monitoring it, during gaming, heat just gets over 40c, so I think I'm OK. I am going to add another 80mm fain, just for good measure. |

This is how i do it.
I put a small gob on my heatsink where the cpu will be in contact with it, using a clean chunk out of a plastic beg, i work it out to the edges of where the cpu will be in contant, it's pretty damn thin but i don't wipe it off (tried that, didn't work when i wiped it off a bit to cut back on the paste). Next i do the same to the cpu, light, spread it to the edges. Pop the heatsink on and give it a bit of a twist in both directions before poping the clip on. Every since i started doing this, i've been getting excellent temperatures on everything.
