Radeon 9700 driver issues need help please!
I bought my laptop from Ibuypower.com...specs are:
AMD Athlon 64 3700+ 1GB of RAM ATI Radeon Mobility 9700 w/ 128MB of Video RAM Windows XP Home(sucks I know) As soon as I got it in I installed Steam w/ HL2 and CS:Source because it came with the Laptop. As soon as it finished downloading I ran Half-Life 2 and it came up and told me that the driver for my graphics card was out of date. I chose to continue anyway and set the graphics settings to low. The game started, but every few seconds the graphics glitch and stutter and the sound does the same... so when I got WoW installed I tryed it same graphics settings(low) and it did the same thing...Counter-Strike(not Source) works fine though(I dont understand). No big deal(I thought) I went to ATI and downloaded the new mobility drivers for the9700. I installed them and when my laptop restarted as soon as it got into XP the screen went black. I restarted into safe-mode and rolled-back the driver to the factory one. I then read about the DHmodtools and downloaded them and the regular ATI drivers(not mobility), and tryed to install them that way with the same result. I even tryed the Omega drivers everyone has been talkin about with the same result. I dont know whether the problem is a bad video card or driver or what, but I would like to get the most updated drivers I can installed. I have 2-3 weeks to get the laptop back for a refund so I need help asap. Thank you all. |

Welcome Trendykill...
What brand and model laptop is it, and post also please some driver information for us - ( right click My Computer, click Properties, click Hardware tab, click Device Manager button, expand Display Adapters, right click the name of the video adapter, click Properties, click Driver tab, read Driver Provider - Driver Date - Driver Version).

Excellent info - thank you...
Your driver version equates to the Catalyst 4.6 or so. You might want to try downloading the Offcial ATI Catalyst 5.6 (normal) or 5.7s (available from www.driverheavendownloads.net) and modding them using Patje's DH Mobility Modder after uninstalling your previous driverset. Some laptop users have had to roll back to the Cat 5.6's after having black screen issues with the 5.7s or 5.8s forward. You could read the sticky thread in the Mobility Radeon Drivers and Support forum about the Mobility 5.9s and see what you think... You could also try the Official Mobility 5.9s available from the same place, after uninstalling whatever your previous driver is completely beforehand. You'll have to experiment a bit - but the result for you could well be worth it!
