Have you had any thunderstorms recently? I see the ethernet ports getting fried all the time on modems and routers and such when they get a lightning stricke somewhere nearby.
Oh, and ist spelled receipt :P

I think craig probably means that you should check whether or not the router wants what's commonly called a 'cross-over' cable to work correctly. |

I doubt lightning strike is the cause...otherwise I wouldn't have a single working ethernet port to my name.

I do cable modem tech support for a crappy living and have been doing it for four years. If enough lightning strikes happen in a given area with 300,000+ customers, you're bound to see more things break/ get fried than one guy sitting in his home. Chances are it won't happen to MOST of the people that read this, but it is statistically possible that it happened to him. Regardless, if you look at the fact that you had a thunderstorm and that your ethernet port stopped working on it after or during the thunderstorm it stands to reason that this is the root cause of the issue

), especially after an electrical storm. To the original poster, make sure to try a different patch cable if possible, update the driver in your nic, and try changing the nic's duplex mode (done in the device manager > right click the nic > properties > advanced tab > try changing to 10full duplex), just to make sure the nic is not at fault.

He already said he tried it on other devices (router and xbox) so its down to a bad cable or a bad port. Yes try a different cable, but more than likely its the port.
And Riles- do you guys use Ambit modems? You ever notice that you always get calls about them right after a thunderstorm? Why they put that circuit breaker in it the way they did (all lights on front turn off so customer automatically thinks its dead) I'll never know. I know that every time lightning strikes that I will get one call from an Ambit modem owner.

haha ya we do use them yousaif, and i get the same thing as you. Customers are amazed that replugging it in, or swapping electrical outlets works.
I notice this happens periodically with toshiba modems as well...do you know if they put breakers in theirs too?

I think they do have a circuit breaker in them, though. We have enough customers that own their own Toshibas to have gotten a few of those calls as well. I'm sitting here at work at 5am right now just waiting for the first drunk to call me that has been up all night and totally FUBAR'ed their PC.

Coincidentally, resetting the modem and/or router fixes most connectivity calls...so don't be so lazy next time

![]() And sorry yousaif, I'll try to keep this secret weapon of information private next time Still, the amount of people that I talk to where power cycling fixes their issues, then they say "oh, I just did this a few days/weeks ago..." is quite surprising.
