Motherboard and Processor, Recommendations please
Soo many to chose from, I do have a few things in mind but even when I enter my parameters into neweggs search im still left with way too many results. If anyone has the time to reccomend a good mobo/proc combo that would be great, heres what i have in mind.
P4 or AMD 64 (doesnt really matter) (future upgradibility a big must) 3ghz or comparable (overclockability would be nice) (future upgradibility a big must) PCI-E (no sli, i do have a new psu but i dont think its sli certified) DDR2 $400 +/- a few bucks Any links to products would be much appriciated. Heres what i have in mind: mobo http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813127189 or http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131534 Proc http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819116197

can you hold out a month or two?
975x chipsets are starting to ship out. and Presler and Cedar Mill CPU'sare for sale in january, which are far superior to any current generation Pentium 4 chip. the Presler is a dual-chip (uses a seperate 2MB cache for each chip) 65nm chip. It still uses NetBurst, but the 65nm helps a lot with heat, and they OC damn well compared to Prescotts. |

Only problem is that Intel right now that they are still in a chipset shortage, and there is really no sign of letting up. It's getting really hard to get boards that use their chipsets unless you get them from a compnay you'd never buy from in the first place. |

I dont really want to wait too long currently im paying 40/week for this computer and would like to get rid of it asap but i cant go without one. That asus tipstaff linked too looks good and is affordable, plus they have a refurbed one for around 40 dollars off
G35x, I thought mobos with both agp and pci wernt any good? I definately dont have any use for the agp half. So with the board out of the way all i need is to decide the processor , so about a Pentium 4 640 800mhz fsb (should i look for something with a 1066fsb?)

Probably a DFI mobo. Just my opinion. |

As for processor, if money is tight I would go with the P4 630 which is a 3.0Ghz processor with 2mb cache. Going by Neweggs pricing it's about $51 cheaper than the 640. Of note: make sure you get yourself a well ventilated case as the 2mb cache processors can get pretty hot, and you will find that the motherboard will ramp up the fan speed to try to cool it down. Problem is that the stock Intel fan can get pretty loud at full speed, so a well ventilated case will help to reduce the need for the mobo to ramp things up. |

It should overclock nicely, but just remember this: it can be power hungry. Knowing that, make sure you get yourself a very good, very stable power supply (not a cheap one), as well as very good ram that can handle the FSB stresses.
In fact, give THIS page a looksee. Make note of what they did to get the system stable, and of the potential performance of that chip. |
