internet setup help/modem problem

i got a new laptop, the compaq presario v2000 , very nice, fun to use.. PROBLEM..

cant access the internet!!

the network wizard doesn't help
the network connection isn't working and ipconfig tells you dhcp requests time out

there is nothing wrong with the 'ethernet port' or the 'usb port' as i have tried connecting the internet to both of them!! everytime i put it in

this has limited or no connectivity..

the ethernet cable and connection works with the this computer, even the usb works to! so i know its something do with the laptop

so any suggestions?? i really need them!

by the way: the modem is a : motorolla sb5100 sufrboard cable modem

Use ethernet, after hooking it up, power off the modem for 10-30 seconds and repower it. Then try to repair the connection, or reboot the computer. This should work if the ethernet connection on the lappy is fine, and especially if the connection worked on another computer.

Make sure that in your network connections section in your control panel that they Local Area Connection is "enabled."
