exclamation Need help

Ok wel PC is acting weird.. yesterday I took it apart to clean it becuase it was getting dusty.. anyhow.. I think I had the CD drive mobo connection wrong or something because I'd get this like before it loaded windows.. " Reboot and Select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key" Ok I got this a few times.. but then.. I disconnected the CD drive from mobo.. and it worked.. then connected it back.. and it worked.. WTF .. so last night I chatted for a while and what not and nothing happened.. so I go tto bed.. wake up this morning turn it on and it worked.. Ok so I turn it of.. go to school come home try to start it and AGAIN this message.. " Reboot and Select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key" Any one have an Idea of what I might have done wrong.. or need to do?

Thanks,

LuCifer

System Specs

Sounds like your bios is trying to boot from the CD or floppy and doesn't just automatically go on to try to boot from the hard drive...

Reset the device boot order in your bios setup, change the items around - save it - then go back in again and set the boot device order the way you really want to (CD drive, floppy drive, hard drive, network, etc...) and see if the problem happens again. Could be the bios data caught a static charge during cleaning and needs a little "refreshing"...

Edit: A note here about cleaning modern computers (post AT power supplies...). Used to be back in the 486 days you would want to leave your computer plugged in while cleaning or such to keep the earth ground connected to ground yourself to the metal parts to discharge any static. The computer was plugged in, but power really was off, and the manual power switch had a green ground wire connected to the metal case (further connected to the power supply then the A/C power cord to earth ground) in most cases. Computers based upon the ATX power supply are actually on all the time they are plugged in and additionally seem to have more problems occur after a cleaning - I believe that is occurring nowadays because units are being left plugged in and because of static affecting the sensitive circuitry during cleaning operations. In modern computers, I would be sure to unplug the unit to stop all current flow through the circuitry - which keeps accidents (oops, the screw slipped loose...) from happening - and at least static travels to uncharged rather than charged circuitry. TVs and VCRs do better against power/lightning-static surges when turned off rather than on as well...
