Blizzard get sued over WOW

by Allan Campbell | Thu 26 November 2009, 9:05 | Discuss

World Of Warcraft fan Erik Estavillo is suing Activision Blizzard because he claims that the company "continues to maintain a harmful virtual environment to many of its customers by forcing them to follow [World of Warcraft's] sneaky and deceitful practices".

When we look at his case he says that Walking is one of the key issues as he feels it takes too long to get from one point to another in the game world. The only way you can speed up is through extended play or by purchasing an expansion pack which he is saying is "deceitful".

Estavillo has a plethora of health issues such as OCD, depression, agoraphobia and Crohn's Disease and he says he is at risk of sharing the fate of an Everquest Player called Shawn Woolley who killed himself in 2001.

To lend some weight to his case he has subpoenaed Winona Ryder (who would be able to "explain the significance of alienation in Catcher in the Rye") as well as Martin Lee Gore of Depeche Mode ("he himself has been known to be sad, lonely and alienated as can be seen in the songs he writes").

We fail to see how he could be successful in court, however stranger things have happened.

I think the lawsuit is a waste of money to be honest. I do understand his pain though.

I used to play WoW and I hated how long it took to get from one place to another. Back then you got your first mount at level 40 then the epic mount at 60. I read that they changed the first mount down to level 20... so you can start getting around a little faster, even sooner, now.

You do have to admit though. The developers at Blizzard did a great job making ways for the game to take up tons of your time and keep you playing and paying. That's the main reason I quit. The game was taking too much of my time.

Stranger things have happened indeed but suing blizzard because you have to Walk places until you get to level 20 isn't reason to take them to court. Te kid's got issues? So what? If he claims Blizzard "Caused" him those injuries then it's VERY Obvious they're self inflicted by Addiction to the game.

I'm a smoker but you don't see me taking the british tobacco companies to court for causing me the damage i'm doing to myself every time i spark up.
