7900 Launch... Europe getting the short end of the stick?

So today is the day that nVIDIA and partners announced the immediate availability of the Geforce 7900 GTX and GT models, claiming high performance, cooler running and all-around better than the last generation of cards. Benchmarks are out and it seems that it is a pretty competitive part and a worthy successor to the 7800 series.

There is a problem though. Pricing. nVIDIA announced that the Geforce 7900 GTX would have a $499 MSRP and the Geforce 7900 GT a $299 MSRP. I have checked several American websites and indeed many stores there sell these cards at MSRP levels. How about Europe though? Unfortunately the situation here is not that peachy. You see, availability is not that massive as nVIDIA would have you believe (some sources claim a total of 2000 cards for the whole of Europe as the initial batch), and furthermore, the cards cost much more. To give you an idea of the difference we are talking about, we visited a popular UK retail store to check out pricing. That particular store sells the 7900 GT and GTX with prices that start from 258 and 380 pounds (this translates to $449 and $661 respectively) and it is considered one of the cheapest ones. Many countries don't have stock on launch (for instance here in Greece), and those who do, sell them with prices that can be more than 60% higher than MSRP!

I am not very excited with this whole situation and I haven't seen a mention in any other European websites. I was hoping to get a 7900 GT to be honest for my benchmarking and testing, but I guess it'll have to wait until people who are in charge of pricing decide that us Europeans deserve better prices.

We can actually buy 7900gt here i Denmark for 447$, which is quite cheap, considering the fact that 7900gtx actually starts here at 710$

It's not cheap when it's supposed to cost $299; it's almost 50% more expensive

personally I would class £400 (pounds sterling) as the MAX borderline for buying a videocard. £500 is just insane to me, id rather spend that on bike parts. However I know some people would buy 2 for SLI.

Everyone has differing views and bank balances I guess ....

It is strange indeed; hence I decided to post about it, especially since I saw no European site mentioning it. Besides, as I said in the post, I've already checked with the US stores, prices are normal there.

so what exactly is the problem this time with the geforce 7900 series? i think they're starting to become as scarce as the 7800 512mb.. especially the 7900GTX.

Alien1 is on a distinguished road

Well in my place 1 or 2 shops in here had a small amount of MSI and XFI 7900 sollutions arrived

but some of my countryman "a$$holes" with big bucks and special inside dealings with shop keepers............have already gotten most of them leaving only 1 or 2 7900GT models available as i learned
The bastards have placed orders buy phone and ""dealings"" with the shops from the moment that these were available in here so i was did not even had the chance to buy one when they got here

Really pissed me off as i was waiting for a new card sollution for a long time ago...

All the few 7900GTX models have been sold now and i was waiting and ready of bying one....and all these because of some of my country kissing ass rich morons buying all the GTX by somekind of "shop preorder" and leaving only some GTs

Now i may need to wait until end of month or April for some more GTX models to arrive i guess

maybe i will buy a X1900XT

I've been thinking of buying the XFX 7900GTX. It costs about 5.700 SEK here in Sweden, which is about 715$. Thought it's a shame using an X1600XT card on an abit AN8-32X which is made for fast SLI cards so... Sometime in the middle of april, it will happen.

Well, this is pretty much normal situation. The importers charge pretty extra on the new cards and even the pricelevels of the older ones are many times way over the same stuff in US. When my father was living in US, I could make a good living by just reselling what I bought over the net in US and he send to me - so, this is common.

Don't support expensive shops and they get the message - sooner or later.

PS. is quite normal that - and especially for nVidia - the US market has priority. Always had. Same goes for Creative - just look at the recent X-Fi launch. The best models are there still somewhat hard to get, not to mention the step price. At least when we got them already, they has fixed the stupid PCI issue, msotly happening with nF4 chipsets, so it has some good points too
