ati to 6600gt 2d desktop problems

Hi I upgraded my ati 9600 pro to a nvidia xfx 6600gt.

I did the following
uninstalled drivers via control panel
rebooted to safe mode
ran drivercleaner and chosen ati option
shutdown pc
put in geforce 6600gt
installed 84.25 drivers
rebooted

ran some 3d tests, all stable very good performance as expected. noticed mouse was very jerky in 2nd and slow kerboard rate.

deleted hidden entries in device manager for old radeon 9600 pro
reinstalled gart drivers for my board (nforce 2)
installed 84.21 drivers as I noticed 84.25 were beta

now the keyboard rate is normal but there is still bad 2d performance, some windows have flickering text, gmail fonts look a bit blurry, the mouse is jerky and when moving a window around the screen with the mouse the jerkyness is very obvious.

I have noticed the card downclocks from 500mhz to 300mhz in 2d and wonder if put at 500mhz would this smooth out 2d performance.

Is it possible I may need to reinstall windows? is this behviour normal for the geforce 6600 card?

thanks

it looks like I may be reformatting, I have tried older drivers and currently on 77.77, tried disabling write combining and their is a slight improvement but still 2d feels like a downgrade even scrolling this page up and down isnt smooth and the gpu is struggling with it.

I also noticed the fan downt slow down in 2d and is bit noisy, I tried that gainward util and trying to slow it down in rivatuner but it appears to not work so I am assuming the xfx custom fans cant be toggled.

ok an update on this, I also noticed the bios was running sluggish which would indicate windows drivers etc. are nothing to do with the problem and I now think what is happening is the cpu itself has lost oomph. The good performance in 3d could be explained in that the gfx card does much of the work over the cpu so the impact their is lower.

I suspect it may be possible that the psu has insufficent power which is starving the cpu but the pc isnt crashing and is stable.

The psu is 450watt branded I think antek or something but I have 4 hd's and a dvdrom in this pc along with 3 sticks of ram amd xp 2200+ and a asus a7n8x deluxe v2 motherboard and a pci lan card is in with an audigy 2 value card. 2 case fans plus the cpu fan. Now with the gfx card needing a power cable I think their is 3 splitters in use. Is it possible that with all this I need a better psu and slow cpu is a sympton? I would rather not guess.

If psu what psu be reccomended I dont want top of the price range but understand it needs to be branded and enough to power up what I have, what I am hoping is it isnt the motherboard since if I replaced that I would have gone for a pci-e which would make my new gfx card useless.

Ok I reformatted now, the jerky mouse pointer remains tho but is less obvious now.

I found that if I disable accelleration of mouse and bitmaps it is fully smooth but then other things slow down like browsers etc. so its on max now. I guess this is normal for nvidia 2d accelleration.

My psu I got speedfan to log the readings over a couple of days period and there is no fluctuations at all outside of what I call normal so I am hoping that means my psu is ok for my hardware?
