Brigthness control for videos

I'm sorry if i sound like a complete noob now, even though i have been playing PC games very actively, but this is my first Nvidia Card I have ever and there is just something that I can't figure out.

I got this 6800GS AGP, and - go ahead and laugh it off - I can't make the videos brighter than they are. I'm talking about those previews, movie trailer on the web, they are just too dark.
I tried to adjust it somehow, even tried to change the overlay only, but either get a very bright desktop as well, (which I don't want), or nothing happens.

I tried searching the forum, but I only got an info about a powerstrip program. Is there anyway to control the brightness without downloading/installing another program?
Sorry, if i am just damn blind to see how brightness is controlled on the Nvidia card, but I can't find it.

BattleAxe, I, too, am new to using Nvidia video cards, but I think that I can answer your question. In the color correction settings of the control panel, you need to choose "Overlay" and then you can set the brightness and contrast settings. As I understand this setting, it is only for Video and not for full screen 3d gaming. That is the problem that I am having. Need For Speed Underground 2 does not have an in-game brightness control and I have not found any way to increase the brightness for full screen 3d games. I have a 6800XT and am using an older driver- 84.91 I think. Hope I helped some.

System Specs

he said he already did overlay... though possibly messed up cuz it shouldnt alter the desktop

maybe you could use ffdshow codec & use its internal options to adjust brightness/contrast/gamma/etc
