I just installed my new videocard and the driver disk came with forceware 84.40. Is that the right version that i should have, or is there a newer one out that runs better? This is for a 7900gs.

The official release driver I believe is 97.44 but the driver site for Nvidia is down. You can also try guru3d or stationdrivers for beta drivers if you want to go that route.

This is a question that is frequently asked, but I'll tell you right now that it's mostly mostly a subjective answer.
If you want higher image quality, then go for drivers like DHzer0point. If you want something else, then you'll have to try for something else. Really, what's "best" for your card is what's "best" to you. Like Hapatinkjaky said, the 97.44 is the latest official set, but you may want to try out modified drivers like DHzer0point as I think they are much nicer than stock drivers. To each his own...

Mmm. Sorry about that. The 97.44 is the newest ForceWare release, but it's for GeForce 8 series only.
These are the latest official drivers for your card: http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_2k_93.71.html
