Graphics Card Temp too high?
I seem to get low FPS and I think it has something to do with my temperature. Currently my card is idling at 70 Degrees celcius! That's way too high right? I'm considering buying a VGA cooler for my 7800 GS. Any recommendations?

video cards tend to be very hot, idling around high 60s and loads in the mid 80s
a cooler is a good idea either way

That particular series should be idling at 40-45C, and under load 60-75C.
However, I do have a couple questions: - which 7800GS card do you have? Is is an overclock version (pre-overclocked)? - is the fan on the card actually working? - have you tried running the system with the side panel to your case off, and if so, what was the temps like for the card? - what is the air circulation like in your case? Is there enough air flow? By all indications, yes, you need to replace the cooler. If you can still find one I recommend the Arctic Cooling NV Silencer 5 (Rev.3) as it will exhaust the hot air out of the case, however since it is no longer in production you will have to do a bit of searching for it. If you can't find that one you could always get the newer Accelero X1.

Ok to answer a few questions:
- I have a BFG 7800 GS (don't think it's overclock version) - The fan is still working. I've been running it at 100% to keep it at about 60c idle - I've tried running without the side of the case on. Fan is still 100% and the temperature is about 55c - Don't think the airflow is too great. |

if you have one of those single slot coolers, make sure it's not dusty
http://kn00tcn.net/00-temp-00/kn-dus...es90+temps.JPG i got a zalman & idle ~35 load ~60, quite the difference, but if you dont wanna mess with coolers, just make sure it's not mega dusty, as airflow will not help when the dust blocks it |

My 8800GTX idles around 54C, and sees low 60's loaded, with a Thermalright HR03 Plus and a 53CFM 92mm fan on it.
I also have an AGP X800XL in my old system (XP2800+ @ 400x12) that runs around 53C loaded with a Zalman VF700-CU on it (As well! Also on an Abit AN7). Works really well. Aftermarket VGA coolers are pretty cheap, typically, the Zalman Cooler ran me like 25 USD. Install is easy if you can turn a screw and follow instructions. |
