Are Nvidia going to go bust?
Hi Guys, I was contemplating buying a new 260 or 280 video card but I have been following the Nvidia postings over on the inquirer and one of their news reporters has been saying about all the problems Nvidia are in.
At the start I thought it was just maybe a personal issue this guy had, but I havent seen nvidia addressing it anywhere on the net so maybe its right? This is the latest (of about 10 news articles now) HP pays half for Nvidia's graphic problems - The INQUIRER I really am not sure whether to buy Nvidia and I know a few of my friends feel the same right now. Anyone have any input on this? I dont fancy investing in a card for a few years if they vanish and we are left without any support. |

You know I thought this was crap to at the start but im stunned that Nvidia havent responded in some way if its not right. I know there must be genuine problems but its hard to work out how serious it is. Very concerning imo.

Maybe someone like Zardon could ask Nvidia and try to get us some info?

Funny, ive been following this (as have most people) and I thought the Inq would have been told to stop talking about it, if its not true.
There must be some truth in it, but going bust is a huge claim for them to make, it is bound to be damaging their sales and public confidence. I actually know a few people who are waiting on the 4870 X2 to be realised as they dont want to risk buying the 280 GTX. and im talking big money spending enthusiasts here. IS Nvidia going to vanish? I hope not, would be a huge loss. |

Wow I didnt know that, I had read one before that Nvidia chips were dying but to say a company is going to go bust is surely quite major. Don't they need proof or else its classed as slander?
I wonder if DriverHeaven could ask Nvidia? would be nice to get some legitimate, honest responses from the guys in the company without having to wade through the nonsense on the Inquirer. Problem is with the inquirer, its not always nonsense, some of their "news reporting" has came true before. |

This whole thing revolves around the bonding issue where the GPU chip itself is unbonding from the substrate, right? Cuz if so, I thought this was an issue with the laptop GPUs only (the G84/G86), and not the desktop graphics cards?

Hi tipstaff, yes thats the main point, but apparently going on that article i linked in the first post, the costs will be much higher than Nvidias original statement of around $200 million. the Inq state its in the billions ! which could bust Nvidia.
Scary thought, I mean id hate to be forced to using Amds awful drivers with no options I can't afford to blow all this money on a 280 GTX if the company are on the way out though, im really concerned.

I seriously doubt Nvidia will go bust (never mind the source). Hate to say it but issues like this are more common than most people know.
The big issue w/ the latest desktop chips is that they some times can have heat issues. So if you buy one you have to make sure it doesn't by monitoring it by stressing it to it's limits. |

Even if the maths behind the theory are accurate, they tend to forget that Nvidia, as any large company doesn't have to always operate with profit and not in debt. They will be fine.

This article is not based (completely) on facts, it's based on the thought of the writer and it's a bit farfetched.
Some defectives chips have an overheating problems (too low life at high temperature) and some laptop designs have bad ventilation. The problem only happened because these two factors were combined. It's mainly NVIDIA's fault (probably) because they must have given specs about the range of temperatures the chips could handle and the laptop manufacturer respected them (probably). NVIDIA would never go down so easily. Even with this unexpected expense, NVIDIA is still going to make a lot of money, just not as much as their initial estimate. See here for some information about the problem directly from NVIDIA. |

no offense to anyone in here but you really cant believe half the crap the inquirer posts. Half of it is speculation and there are rumours around the net that Charlie, the guy who is writing all this fud is in bed with a lot of the AMD pr reps. stuff was deleted on the inquirer last week about this in a public thread.
Anyway, rest assured there is absolutely no way Nv are going down the pan, its a lot of nonsense talk. there are some issues with the mobile chips which are being blown out of all proportion. this happens from time to time, and NV will take a hit, but it has nothing to do with their desktop chips. Come on DHers' read what the knowledgable people on DH write like Zardon and Veridian3, ive seen neither of them confirming this in any article, in fact ive never seen it even mentioned. You think they would let their readers down if this wasnt really really serious?
