Worrying "news"?
According to this the 8 and 9 series are doomed to hardware failure.
Now, I take what the inquirer says not very seriously, but, the last time they mentioned this about the 8400m and 8600m they were right on the money. Now they claim that the desktop models too are affected by this. What do you think?

Hmmm, interesting, but I don't know. I don't see anything actually factual in the article, just a bunch of "he said" speculation. Plus, its the INQ.
A buddy of mine has been having trouble with specific brand 8600 cards, but it's to do with failing fans, not something wrong with the chips themself. My 8800 is running fine. |

I am not so much worried about my desktop (8800GTS 640mb) because it will either be sold or put in storage sometime this month or next, but I was planning on buying a notebook for main system and had a beautiful Toshiba model with a 9700mGTS ready to order (well, in a week or two), so now I am worried, a lot.
The only other solution would be with going with an ATI GPU, but the fastest that I can find is mobility radeon 3650 which I am afraid is not good enough for games that I play. So, if it is true, go for one that will fail sooner or later, or stick with much lower graphics performance...annoying. I tell you though, if this too is true, I don't know how I will be able to trust Nvidia again for quite some time. (regardless what I will do with the notebook thing)

I was actually chatting to a PR guy in Nvidia i know well today and he said that Charlie is basically on an ANTI-nvidia tirade right now.
There were issues with some mobile chips and Nvidia lost (or will lose) $200 million over it. They admitted that publically. The desktop chips apparently do not have the issues. I am not saying that is the case mind you as I have no idea, im just saying what I was told. Charlies articles on the inquirer seem rather anti nvidia lately, in fact it has been some time since ive read anything else, but factually im not so sure this article has anything grounded. It certainly wouldnt put me off buying their products. I have used almost every range and model of card of theirs in the last 3 or 4 years and I can honestly say the only problem I have had was with an preoverclocked XXX XFX 8800 Ultra. nVidia make quality products, when they stop doing that we will be the first to tell you. Ill leave you with this great post from a hardocper.... http://www.hardforum.com/showpost.ph...0&postcount=28 |

i came across a radeon 3700 in a laptop.. the performance of it was quite similare to that of being a slightly underclocked HD3850.... which imo... is pretty damn good @ 1400x900 on a 17"

My 8800GT has been running fine since I purchased it, which was about 2 weeks after they launched, no problems here.
I have always loved nVidia, after they killed my beloved voodoo anyway... haha. Seriously though, ive never had problems, the companies sporting nVidia has always been good, TS has always been good, everything. /Shrug, Ill recommend ati when it is better for whatever job, but most of the time I find that they arent. -Syn

I have a 8800 GTS 640 since December 2006 IIRC. No problems with it yet. BUT, lots/most of people with the 8400m and 8600m didn't have a problem either...
I am very satisfied with my 8800gts and if I were to keep my desktop, I wouldn't even consider upgrading it for some time. Considering the desktop versions are out for 1.5-2 years now and I don't think there has been any sudden increase of malfunctioning cards, then yes, I am not worried about them so much, no matter what the article says. I am more afraid of the mobile solutions. While I was aware of the problem with the 8400m and 8600m, I always thought that Nvidia wouldn't do the same mistake twice, with the 9xxxm series, it would be...stupid. I don't know if the Inquirer is right, but it doesn't seem too far fetched. Of course all good lies use some truth in them. I just don't know...I can't afford to have my future notebook die on me while I am on my final year or for another 1-2 years. I can accept one, even so big, mistake by Nvidia (8400m-8600m), but if it goes as far as the Inquirer claim then... I read elsewhere that the problem is not so much the high temperature by itself, but the sudden change of temperature that makes certain "connections" break or something, due to bad design/materials/whatever. I am not sure how this could be dealt with, but it strikes me as similar to a certain issue of the Xbox 360. Of course it could all be BS, including this info. Judas, where did you see that laptop? Model? Any more info?

honestly not worried, 8800 GTS 512 has been the best investment I have made so far. It has gone over and above my expectation and is going to last (for me) similar to ATI's old 9800 Pro.
This card has continued to pay off and these rumors aren't worth sh*T. |
