Re: 9800 GT problems

No more BSODs/crashes? Good to hear.

What did you end up getting PSU wise? And what was your old one (brand wise)?

Re: 9800 GT problems

Umm not sure what teh old one was, the new one is 600 AcePower.
Still getting some random CTD and the fps just sucks for the machine specs. My old single core with a 128 card played it at the same level better.
What should i get from Nvidia to boost the clock speeds?Should i dl and use this?
http://www.nvidia.com/object/nvidia_...ools_6.02.html
I installed the NVIDIA System Tools and i want to overclock this pig..any suggestions? And it says i have Direct X 9c..i installed 10, whats the deal?

Re: 9800 GT problems

? The 9800GTs only have 1 power cable. A 6 pin PCIE power connector, to be precise.

Question: does your power supply come with a dedicated PCIE power connector, and if so, are you using it and not one of the other types of power connectors, such as the 8 pin PCIE or 8 pin ATX connectors (which is used on high end boards like Intels Extreme series) forced on there? If not, are you using some sort of adapter that takes a molex (old style hard drive/optical drive 4 pin) connector and converts that to 1 PCIE power connector? If so, is it a 1 molex to 1 PCIE or 2 molex to 1 PCIE? While the 1 to 1 connector works for some lower end cards you need the 2 to 1 connector for this card.

Always check for heat issues. Make sure your chassis is properly cooled!

Not that I've read. In essence the 8800GT and the 9800GT are the same cards, both fabricated at 65nm with tri-SLI support having been added to the 9800GT. The only difference is the 9800GT done at 55nm which runs cooler, and at a higher clock rate, so it'd be a tad faster too (as well as use 5-10 watts less power). Other than that the 9800GT is essentially a tried and tested solid design.

As I mentioned, as long as you installed the system drivers in order (Windows, chipset, then everything else), and have the latest bios (which was necessary to support that specific CPU), you should be fine UNLESS the card is bad, or there is some stability/compatibility issue between the board and another component, such as the CPU or the RAM.

Of note, I was talking to a friend of mine who has the same board as you (I'm an Intel guy, he's the AMD guy), and he told me about something that might be of interest to you. That particular board has gone through 3 revisions, and in order to support the Phenom you need to use different bios versions for the revision of the board you are using. With revision 1.0 and 1.1 you need to use bios version F13 or higher, and with revision 2.0 you need to use bios FE or higher. He did mention that while this is the case with the triple core Phenoms he doesn't know for sure if the quads would work properly, and suggested that the issues you are having could be related to the board not liking that chip.

Going on that, it might be worth looking into trying out a triple core Phenom to see if you have the same issues. Short of switching boards, or switching to Intel there's not much else I can think of for you to try other than to talk to Gigabyte directly. I wish I could be of more help, scopie.

actually, the 9800GT is pretty much the same card as the 8800GT as can be seen in these pictures. the 9800GT does NOT support 3-way SLI like you said. also, to my understanding, you can flash an 8800GT with a 9800GT's BIOS and then have a 9800GT out of your 8800GT. but, i cannot vouch for that to be true or not as i have not tried it myself.

No tri-SLI? Could it be manufacture specific? The reason I ask is that one time I had seen a tri-SLI Asus setup (3 way EN9800GT Hybridpower cards), however I found it interesting that no other manufacturer had touted it.

nope, no 3-way SLI on the 9800GT cards. the card you saw may have been an ASUS spin-off of a 9800GT card, but the reference model 9800GT cards, are just your standard 2-way SLI configuration.

the 9800GTX/GTX+ cards though are based off of the 512MB 8800GTS cards but with support for 3-way SLI. This could be the card you're thinking of. Those were originally based off of the 65nm process and then later re-fabbed to the 55nm process.

Re: 9800 GT problems

tipstaff is right, i was reading these XFX and EVGA 9800gt reviews where the reviewer mentions that only the Asus version is tri-SLI capable, the others aren't.

i googled '9800gt blue screen' and this thread was the first result that came up. i just got one yesterday from a friend who's looking to upgrade to a gtx280. problem is i too am getting the same bsod as scopie. i ran nfs undercover and that worked just fine on everything at high, although the frames weren't as good as i was hoping they'd be. then i ran far cry 2 and it crashed with the bsod after just a few secs of game. twice.

mind you i have a 400w psu (little known brand). the guy i got this from was running the card on a mercury 450w psu and it was working fine on that, so i guess its a psu issue. (currently on a x1950 pro, e4400 oced to 2.6, 2gb gskill ram).

i'll be getting a CM 500w tomorrow, shall update then.
