GTX 260 (55 nm) or GTX 285?

I currently have an EVGA 8800GT Superclocked Edition card and am considering upgrading...but I'm torn as to which card will give me the better price/performance ratio--the new GTX 285 or the EVGA 260 Core 215 55nm card (I'm a hard core gamer---Crysis, Fallout 3, Far Cry 2 etc)

they're both 55nm and although the GTX 285 will be the better performer the GTX 260 card should be pretty sweet itself with a better price tag...anyone have any opinions?...also is EVGA the only manufacturer selling the 55nm GTX 260 cards?

All a question of price really. I'd still rather have a 4870 1GB than the GTX260 in any flavour due to the superior AA/AF performance but the GTX285 is in a different league and clocks extremely well compared to the 4870-1Gb

Thing is though, the 4870X2 is the same price point and much faster as well, so I'd probably get that if I was you.

I'm actually not a fan of the dual GPU or SLI/Crossfire setups...don't think the performance is worth the price tag...plus you would think that getting SLI would make your cards last longer but they don't...when the next generation of cards come out, a single card usually beats out (or is very close) in performance to the previous generation's dual GPU setup...not worth it...not to mention the high power output, heat etc

that's why I'm looking into purchasing another single GPU card...looking at some reviews of the 4870 1GB cards it seems that the GTX 260 beats it in terms of performance and lower power consumption...also the GTX 285 is $100+ more then the GTX 260 so I'm thinking the 260 would be the better buy...especially if buying an overclocked 260...does the GTX 285 perform $100+ better then the 260?

Absolutely the GTX 285.

You don't want SLI so you need the fastest available card which will last the longest. The GTX260 is a great card but it really only shines in SLI (which is what I planned to do when I got mine). Back then two 260GTX's was cheaper than a single 280GTX. That's no longer the case, the recent price drops make the 285 very appealing for those looking to upgrade and I'd go for it without hesitation.

what recent price drop?...the GTX 285 just came out last week...or are you talking about the GTX 280?

Correct, they are basically the same performance clock for clock it's just that the new ones allow for higher overclocking and I suppose run cooler. You might even be able to save money going for a GTX 280 if the prices have dropped low enough.

Bottom line is that you're stuck with a single card so you want either the best one available or a dual card such as the AMD X2 line or 295GTX.
