Resolution problem

I just recently purchased a new Dell Studio (I know I know about dells and stuff dont have to tell me lol, parents paid for it) anyways it came with a geforce 9800gt. I do some basic gaming as in Left 4 Dead and Medieval Total War. I turned my computer on and i noticed after the Intel loading screen and before the Vista loading screen (vista blows.) my screen went red. Then when it finised booting up the screen was cut in half. I was orginally using 1280 x 1080. now i have to use 1152 x 864. Im just wondering if this is a monitor issue or did something go wrong with my graphics card. Thank you.
