Resolution stuck after ATI to NVIDIA switch

Emachine T4480

Intel Pentium 4 2.8GHZ
SIS 651 + 962L Chipset

Had an ATI Radeon 9000 Video Card witch I swaped out for a Geforce3 Ti200. Now stuck at 640x480 resolution.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled, run DriverCleaner and CAB Cleaner following all instructions with Spybot TeaTimer and Anti-Virus turned off as well as Network disconnected.

Checked BIOS for any settings related to AGP port (as on my old AZ11e Motherboard that the Geforce3 card came out of) but I cannot find any.

Best it has done is after install of drivers but before reboot it appears to be at 800x600 but reverts to 640x480.

You folks here have proven yourselfs to be gods and angels with help you have provided me in the past, I prey that you are still here and can help with this prob as well before I do something evil to this much appreciated donated computer that runs slow as hell (I'll be upgrading the ram outta pocket from the 512MB myself shortly) here at the non profit Fraternal Order of Eagles where I am the Secretary

I'll be trying a reinstall of the Nvidia drivers in safe mode while I await any advice. Thanks in advance, Ken

Re: Resolution stuck after ATI to NVIDIA switch

I had this problem with similar hardware about a month ago, but couldn't find a fix. Sorry to say I did a new install of windows to fix it.

I wish I could help more, hopefully somebody will respond with a fix other than this but I wasn't getting any takers.... http://www.hardwareheaven.com/windows-...0-x-480-a.html

Best of luck to ya man!

Re: Resolution stuck after ATI to NVIDIA switch

I have seen similar issues fixed by uninstalling the anti spyware programs, try that. However this is a rather odd issue to have especially after using Driver cleaner so it shouldn't be a conflict with any old driver remains.

Re: Resolution stuck after ATI to NVIDIA switch

This has happened to me again, this time with the mobo graphics replacing a Matrox AGP card, and not stuck at 640X480 but 1024X768..... won't change beyond that and fully capable of up to 1600X1200. (same system I linked to above) I don't use this system much anymore (doesn't even have a case at the moment) so for now I'm more inclined to figure this out, time permitting, than do a reinstall of windows.

Somewhere there must be a windows "max resolution" setting or some such .....

May be an anti-virus deal, but I'm thinking it's not... my anti-V won't load in safe mode and I've reinstalled drivers in safe mode....... Gotta be something else.

@ Kenjesse, If I find anything I'll post it here....... Be nice to figure this one out.

Re: Resolution stuck after ATI to NVIDIA switch

Kenjesse,

I was messing with this system a little bit last night and there are quite a few registry settings involving screen res but although I was able to set 1280X1024 as default I couldn't use the normal video settings utility to change it from there. So, that's not a fix for you. At the moment I'm still working with the SIS mobo graphics.... now that I have it to 1280X1024 I will try my GeForce3 Ti200 AGP card and see what happens..... I'm not holding out much hope here though.

Before this I did try doing this with anti-virus disabled and that made no difference.

As I said before, a re-install of windows fixed this for me before and that may be something you may need to prepare for yourself, I'm sorry to say.

Re: Resolution stuck after ATI to NVIDIA switch

Sorry to be away so long but appreciate the responses. I've reinstalled the ATI 9000 card that was originally in the system, using driver cleaner, and got stuck at 1024x760. Werid thing is using the WinXP Utility to change res to native (1440x900) for SyncMaster 906bw Monitor results in no change. If I use the ATI Catalist Utility I can get 1440x900 and it works great right up until I reboot at which point it goes right back to 1024x760.

Would have to agree the prob is a XP reg entry limiting the res but I don't have nearly enough talent to track it down. If anyone out there needs any additional info from me including reg info will be only to glad to provide it as I'm sure a fix for this will be helpful to many and I'm sure it is also at the heart as to why the same type of prob happened with the change from ATI to Nvidia in the 1st place.

Again my thanks to the Gods that walk amoung us here at Driver Heaven...
