Gainward GTX260 with 1792mb Ram?
Whilst I wait patiently for win7 and the DX11 cards I thought i'd pick up a card for my secondary system which is going to be running Vista. Whilst browsing online stores today I stumbled upon this:
Gainward GeForce GTX 260 "Core 216" 1792MB GDDR3 Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail It's basically a enhanced GTX260 with 1792mb of VRAM, It fits the price range i'm playing with but wondered if anyone has any benchmarks/opinions on it? Would the doubled memory be beneficial at 1920x1200 considering I mainly play Fallout3, LOTRO, Left4Dead and MS FSX. Just thought i'd give my reasons for choosing the GTX260 range. I don't trust the heats produced by the GTX275's and the GTX285's are a bit to expensive, whilst someday I may make the jump back to ATI I'm just not ready to make that move yet. |

not sure it will make a huge difference. only game my current gtx 260 struggles on (with ram) is GTA4, that's only if I want to bump to very high settings, then the 896mb hits cap easily.

Re: Gainward GTX260 with 1792mb Ram?
Done some digging and found some benchmarks for various games, the extra memory seems to have very little benefit for the majority of games at 1920x1200. Might be more beneficial at higher resolutions but it's hard to find comparisons at the moment. Cooling solution looks pretty good though.

What does this do?

Re: Gainward GTX260 with 1792mb Ram?
I doubt the extra memory would be a big difference particularly in the titles you mentioned, and you might be better off spending the extra (compared to a standard 260) on something with a non reference cooler - the extra overclocking room would probably have a bigger impact most of the time.
You also said that this is or your secondary PC - why not save a little, buy a 9800GT (still a great card) and spend the extra on that DX11 card you're looking forward to for your main rig.
