8800GTS 320MB for Photoshop CS4 ???

Hey all, I'm building a dedicated rig for photoshop cs4 and am wondering if my XFX 8800GTS XXX 320MB would cut it for the OpenGL GPU acceleration that CS4 is boasting about. Its only 320MB but people with 8600's and lower with only 256MB have been running it fine I hear.

Any feedback would be GREAT!!!

Thanks,

Jordan

Well that 8800 GTS is still a strong card as far as I am concerned. I am running the CS4 trial on my Athlon 5200+ system using a 9600GT without issues.

EDIT: The system requirements are listed in this link

Re: 8800GTS 320MB for Photoshop CS4 ???

Well, since you plan to use GPU acceleration then I strongly recommend getting a card with 512MB or more, since it is possible to have image corruption when working with multiple large files (several gigabytes) due to the lack of memory on GPU. The files would of course be fine, but the images would be corrupted (not able to display parts of it or a whole image.)

If you plan to work with smaller images and one project at a time you should be fine.

Re: 8800GTS 320MB for Photoshop CS4 ???

Thanks for the feedback guys. I haven't heard of anyone have image corruption from lack of GPU ram. If you don't mind me asking, where did you read or hear that? Did you know what card they were using? I've been doing a lot of research and haven't come across that.

Plus, do you guys think I should go with a Q9550 ($219) or i7 920($279) for the CPU. The benchmarks on Anandtech AnandTech Bench (beta): Adobe Photoshop CS4 - Retouch Artists Speed Test show a minimal difference in Photoshop and the i7 platform is quite a bit more pricey than LGA 775. However 12GB of RAM would definitely be better than 8 and LGA 1366 will be more future proof/upgrade friendly.

Re: 8800GTS 320MB for Photoshop CS4 ???

Not sure on the image corruption issue mate I do know the 8800 GTS has a larger and stronger GPU than say the 9600GT. On the CPU it depends what you want to spend as you will need a new mainboard and RAM as well. The Q9550 is really cheap right now I might pick one up myself but it's a judgment call on your part.

If I build a new rig from scratch it will be i7.

Re: 8800GTS 320MB for Photoshop CS4 ???

Thanks Mac! I downloaded the CS4 trial last night and I have to admit it runs pretty smooth even on my 2 1/2 yr system with an x2 6000+ and 4GB DDR2 800. I think the 8800GTS 320MB will be just fine!
