nvidia GeForce 8800 GTX 768mb Problem (I THINK)

K i think my graphics card is dying or something. Past few days, when playing counter strike source.. On certain maps my fps would drop from around 200 to 60 and then id get graphic errors - Here an image of what i mean by errors:

http://img219.imageshack.us/img219/2856/ghhhfg.jpg

And basically general play seems weird to me, hard to explain that one though. And then today Whilst in the middle of a game my computer just restarted itself.. so i got back on and into game and it restarted a second time, but on the second time its like it froze totally, but it was still running yet nothing was going through to my monitor as that jsut went on standby kind of thing.

So yea, not sure.. Im guessing it could be an overheating problem? i checked my temps and there at 81 celsius, although ingame it goes up to 101 sometimes. thats with my fan at 64% (i think :/) which is what its always been at with no probs.

Ive tryed cleaning out dust etc but no luck, any ideas please all?

Re: nvidia GeForce 8800 GTX 768mb Problem (I THINK)

those are EXTREMELY high temps for an 8800GTX man..... im afraid that the card may just be permanently fried 100C on the card is far too high..... boiling temperature...

safe maximum is usually around the 80C range with idle being from 40-60C

the restarting issue may also point to a PSU failure unless its a BSOD which could just be a hardware issue due to the fried card

if the card still errors, that means its gone pretty much.... im sorry man...

you can try clearing out and reinstalling drivers but if the system is completely unstable even in the BIOS, i dont know what else to do

if its still in warranty, you can try RMAing it... hopefully you have it registered with the company...

maybe you can take the cooler off and give the card a good cleaning with isopropyl alcohol and reapply high end thermal paste to it? might just work....

Re: nvidia GeForce 8800 GTX 768mb Problem (I THINK)

Mmm.. My 2 x 8800gtx cards do that in Sli.. In the summer I get idle temps of 75c.. And in games I can get upto 105c.. yes its dangerous.. but ive been running these cards like this for months now.. I put a fan blower below the top card, and above the second card (in between) and the temps have dropped to a modest 95c max.. I had artifacts until I turned down the overclock from 15% to 10%..

I've never had temps of below 60c idle and I know many that never get below 55c.. So when I here people saying they get 40 - 50 idle using these cards, I guess theyre just plain lucky.

I recommend using a program such as Rivatuner to set your fans to manual. Set them to run at 70% of their full speed at idle, which isn't too loud, just noticeable and 100% when gaming. I know this is possible with Evga Precision too.

When I had a 8800GTS I was getting very high temps too. Fixed by the folllowing:
Step one, clean the case from dust, including the graphics card which is probably a mess now.
Step two, make sure there is plenty of air circulation (pathways) inside the PC case so that air can go in and out without much problem.
Step three, set fan such that at idle the temp is at worst in the 60C
Step four, try again
Five, six, grab your crucifix
Oh wait, that's from something else, nvm.
