Nvidia 9800 GTX+

Hey guys, I had an old account here but don't know what it is anymore ><

I just built a new computer and got this Video card.

I was wondering if anyone has any advice with drivers; Forceware?

or Overclocking tips?

I just built a new comp and I want it to run at the best it can.

It doesnt have to be a beast but I want it to run at a much better potential then it is.

When I have all my fans at high and also my fans in room my cpu runs at 15 C, but if it's a little bit hotter it runs at around 27.

The GPU is around 35Cel, but Im trying to look online on how to increase the fan speed.

I'm not sure on what I can do with the vid card and I'm really interested in finding out.

Re: Nvidia 9800 GTX+

I saw an Ntunes program and also ATItool.

Do those work automatically?

Not quite sure.

UglyLittleMan needs some serious mental readjusting

Re: Nvidia 9800 GTX+

GPU at 35C??? OMG RMA time!!!
LMAO just kidding brother.
those things can run at 100C without battin an eyelid, so I reckon ur safe.

PS get EVGA Precision for all ur temp monitoring, OCing needs. much better than Ntunes.

35C is more than fine is excellent for that kind of card. their safe limits are around 100C although its recommended not to go over 75-85C ( depending on the card). As for monitoring programs what brand is your vga. Many companies have their own Gpu monitoring programs that are great. For instance gainward has expert tool. Also download ntunes and nvidia monitor from nvidias site

Re: Nvidia 9800 GTX+

Your temperatures may vary due to the ambient temperature of your room but I can set my fan to 80% and put the card under full load without ever going above 58 degrees, which isn't even close to hitting the danger zone. If I recall correctly it is wise to stay away from 80 degrees with nVidia cards and 90 degrees with ATi.

EVGA Precision allows you to tweak the core and shader clocks as well as the memory frequency and fan speed so it should be able to handle everything. You can also save overclocking profiles too.

I have yet to really find any driver version since the 180 series that gives a jump in performance both in game and with 3DMark so just pick up the newest and go from there.

As far as what you can do, I was able to hit 840mhz on the core (linked with the shader clock) and 1,215mhz (2.43ghz effective) on the memory in 32-bit XP. Since moving to 64-bit Vista I have had to back down a bit or I end up with constant driver crashes. It happens in Windows 7 as well since I think they both use the same driver.

C'mon nVidia. Give me my OC back!

Overclocking isn't hard. Just take it slow and test for stability. Increase your core frequency first in jumps of 10-15mhz. Use ATi Tool to test for stability by running the artifact scan. If it passes a 3 minute test, move on with another bump of 10-15mhz. Once you hit your limit where you no longer pass a 3 minute test, move it back to your previous value and try a 15 minute test. If it passes, move it forward in a smaller increment, say 7mhz and try to dial it in. After you find out what your maximum core frequency is, do the same with your memory. I don't tend to worry too much about the shader clock but you can set this separately from the core clock using EVGA Precision. If you're really a stickler for an extra FPS or an extra 50-100 points in 3DMark the go for it. Once you think you have everything dialed in you can go for a 30 minute artifact scan. If it passes that you know that you have a 100% stable overclock.

The great thing about this card is that you will likely lock up your system, cause the driver to crash and recover or cause a BSOD before you even come close to hurting the card since voltage increases are not involved and the cooler is really robust. One of the best stock coolers out there but having the GPU fabricated on a 55nm die doesn't hurt either.

I'd like to see some benchmark results with stock and overclocked as well. Also feel free to hit me by PM if you run into any problems.

Good luck!

Re: Nvidia 9800 GTX+

It should work like a charm assuming you are using XP. ATi Tool does not have support for Vista...at least it didn't the last time I tried it.

Precision to overclock, ATi Tool to verify.

Best of luck and here's hoping for a screaming overclock!
