GT300 is a monster
I just saw the specs at nVidia GT300's Fermi architecture unveiled: 512 cores, up to 6GB GDDR5 - Bright Side Of News*
I remember someone commenting that the NVIDIA chip will likely have the performance of 5870 crossfire, but also the same price. From the specs, looks like it probably won't be far from it. |

Re: GT300 is a monster
If this article is true that will be good achievement , however it isn't expected to achieve these specs right now.
I don't think it will be like 2X 5870 , that's overestimate . And another thing about the price ,nVidia really don't show competitive prices since ages so this one is going to have a ridiculous price as usual.

Re: GT300 is a monster
The big thing IMO is the native C++ support. the 384 bit bus rather than 512 should help to bring down manufacturing costs too.

Re: GT300 is a monster
that whole thing doesnt smell like bullshit at all...
if any of that is true, it explains the rumored less then 2% yield rate for the cards. im also 100% certain that if any of this is true, the price will be sky high for even the base line card. nvidia isnt known for being cheap or competitively priced. if theyre faster then the 5870, and by a wide margin, theyll tack on a huge premium price.

Re: GT300 is a monster
TBH I'd bet that the less than 2% yield rumour was started by ATI. I'm sure Nvidia would do the same to them.

Re: GT300 is a monster
this seems really very very powerful, but IMO its more a card for programmers than for gamers. this is also a point where i doubt that the main target market (gamers) will be willing to pay the expected price for that "gpu".. considering 3bn transistors and the fact that the 5870x2 is obviously struggling with the power consumption (and maybe heat, as well) - how will this thing be able to run inside a "normal" consumer pc?
can someone explain what this new IEEE 754-2008 floating-point standard is supposed to be, and why the most recent cpus still dont have that? i just came across this article - i dont wanna bash on the green team, since being a fanboy of the red one, or anything like that, im just interested in the credibility of these accusations. maybe someone here can state an objective oppinion on that.. Hahaaaa
, Epic Green Fail.Nice article , although I believe they can make new GPU but not with that ridiculous specs. It would take a year or more just making researches about that monster.

Re: GT300 is a monster
Nvidia's next card will be interesting for sure, and we all know it will be better than the GTX285/295... my gut feel though is that the card may well lean a bit too far towards GPU computing and away from gaming, for the current market/world anyway.
In terms of futerproofing for GPU computing it will be impressive... but i just dont think it will have the massive gains over the 5870 that most people expect in games. (Though it will still be competitive) Fermi will also stand NV in a good position for the stage when GPU computing really takes off because then they will have that side of their architecture well and truly refined. |

Re: GT300 is a monster
What are people going to use the power of this card to do? Are there any developers pushing the boundaries of PC gfx or are they all simply developing for the lowest common denominator - the XBOX and PS3.

it'll doing blazing physics caculations..... but probably marginally outperform the 5870

Re: GT300 is a monster
Nice article about it at Anandtech: AnandTech: NVIDIA's Fermi: Architected for Tesla, 3 Billion Transistors in 2010
NVIDIA says they plan to bring this to the lower end pretty quickly. |

Re: GT300 is a monster
It is a fair point that current high end graphics seem massive overkill for almost all current games. The might not be that much more money in high end cards if mid range ones, like the 5850, can tackle almost any game at almost any resolution.

Re: GT300 is a monster
There are tons of rumors floating around about Fermi being less powerful than a 285, that its a GPGPU, that it has been pushed back again...I'm not buying any of it - both the articles or the actual card itself until there are benchmarks available and unless Nvidia can fill all the price points that AMD has with the 5700's and beat it in performance.
